The thumbs up and thumbs down gestures come from ancient Rome, especially from the gladiator games. ▼ The audience or the emperor used thumbs to show their decision about the gladiator’s fate. ▼ Thumbs up meant approval, victory, or mercy – the gladiator could live. ▼ Thumbs down meant disapproval, defeat, or death – the gladiator would be killed. ▼ However, some historians say the meanings might have been the opposite, but today the common use is thumbs up = good, thumbs down = bad. ▼ Thumbs up is used to show agreement, success, or that something is good. ▼ Thumbs down shows disagreement, failure, or dislike. ▼ These gestures are popular worldwide and are often used without words. ▼ On the internet and social media, thumbs up is used to like or agree with posts or comments.
