ToC After Kentucky: We’re not angry; just disappointed.

Did Ole Miss get high off its own supply? Maybe Jaxson Dart and the Ole Miss offense after first four weeks. ‘Cause they got knocked in the mouth against Kentucky and wilted.  Hello again, friends, and welcome inside an unfortunate edition of Talk of Champions — powered, as always by RiverLand Roofing and the Ole Miss Spirit. The Rebels are 4-1 and 0-1 in SEC games.  No, it’s not over; Ole Miss wins the rest of its regular-season games and it’s in College Football Playoff. But 10 wins with a loss to Kentucky isn’t going to cut it, not to mention Ole Miss gave its non-believers all the ammunition they needed to not take the Rebels seriously until Georgia in November.  Ole Miss was favored in each of its remaining games, according to ESPN. But when finally given the opportunity to shut its doubters up, the Rebels leaned all they way into their absolute worst impulses. We’re not angry; just disappointed. Kentucky’s physicality noticeably took the air out of Ole Miss’ sails. One-sided officiating is excuse-making.  I didn’t see that fire. The swag. The air-it-out, YOLO style (on offense, mostly) that has made Ole Miss what it is under fifth-year head coach Lane Kiffin. I saw timidness. Players unsure of themselves. A game plan completely in a pretzel when off script.  All things of a typical Lane Kiffin team at Ole Miss. But this wasn’t supposed to be a typical Lane Kiffin team at Ole Miss.  It was supposed to be a title contender. Now it’s a bubble team fighting for its life. 2. It’s Ole Miss vs. Everybody as the SEC gauntlet opens

It’s Ole Miss vs. Everybody as the SEC gauntlet opens

Your No. 6-ranked Ole Miss football Rebels are 4-0 and open SEC play this weekend against Kentucky on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ABC.  Ole Miss gave up its first touchdown of the season to Georgia Southern, leaving Georgia as last remaining team in college football that hasn’t. But the Rebels still wrecked the Eagles, the best team they’ve played so far, and again without necessarily playing all that well. I remember when Hugh Freeze was raising the bar for Ole Miss in the modern era and still struggled with Georgia Southern. These Rebels are different, while Freeze is showing over at Auburn he hasn’t changed a bit.  Welcome inside the RiverLand Roofing Studios for an all-new edition of Talk of Champions. The Rebels have figure out the penalties, for example. They entered the weekend 14th in the SEC and racked up the flags and north of 100 yards of penalties against Georgia Southern. Those are the kind of unforced errors — removing helmets, etc. — that can sink a contender, especially when the sloppiness comes during an 11 a.m. kick. Remember the Jefferson Pilot days? Chaos reigns on game-day mornings. But in Lane Kiffin Ole Miss trusts. Sure, Freeze changed things. He recruited at a level Ole Miss had never seen before. He took the Ed Orgeron playbook and perfected it. Orgeron dared to ask, ‘Why not Ole Miss?’ Hugh Freeze dared to say, ‘Of course Ole Miss.’  Lane Kiffin is saying: Ole Miss vs. Everybody. It’s the natural next step in the Ole Miss program ascension. Trending or Ending? Tennessee is being wish-casted into a role Ole Miss is already playing

Welcome inside an all-new edition of Talk of Champions, powered by RiverLand Roofing and the Ole Miss Spirit. For all your roofing needs, text or call RiverLand Roofing today at (662) 644-4297. Visit them online at RiverlandRoofing.com.  No. 5 Ole Miss looks for Win No. 4 against a capable, 2-1 Georgia Southern on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT on the SEC Network. The Eagles are the best team Ole Miss has played so far — the first of four Ole Miss storylines I see as either trending or ending with kickoff around the corner. ENDING is Ole Miss’ preseason concerns about its running back room. TRENDING is Tennessee being wish-casted into the role these Rebels are already playing. Ole Miss is No. 2 nationally and leads the SEC in explosive plays (20 yards or more). Star wide receiver Tre Harris is tied or first in the country for most receptions of 15-plus yards. He’s got 13. Ole Miss is one of three teams in the country that hasn’t allowed a touchdown this season. The others are Ohio State and Georgia. Ole Miss has the highest-graded defense (92.8) in football, according to Pro Football Focus. Ole Miss is No. 1 in the nation in defensive rushing efficiency. The Rebels haven’t allowed a touchdown through three games for the first time since 1961. Tennessee is really good. But the same criticisms Ole Miss is getting — the Rebels haven't played anybody, etc. — aren’t being equally applied to the Volunteers.  I’m just saying, national-media types: Save some of that Tennessee energy for Ole Miss, even though for a lot of you it’s probably really hard, seeing as you tried to bury the Rebels in 2016 and yet here they are, title-chasing not even 10 years later.
