    Negativland Pushes Limits of Art and Law

    Since 1978, the San Francisco musical collective Negativland has pushed the boundaries of experimental music, performance art, intellectual property and the public domain. Ranging from tweaking the Irish band U-2, to mashups of the Teletubbies themes, to animatronic Abraham Lincoln mannequins, the band continues to lampoon modern culture. Negativland is getting ready for a performance with visual artist Sue-C. They will perform at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art on Friday September 27, along with a screening of the documentary “Stand By for Failure:  A Documentary About Negativland.” This is a collaboration with Mills Folly Cinema.     Community Group Beats Donated Guns into Garden Tools

    The Book of Isaiah, chapter 2 verse 4 reads “And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” The RawTools Cooperative has decided to apply that biblical admonition to the modern world, with their Guns to Garden Tools program.  On Saturday, September 28, the Eastmorland Community Center invites the community to bring in unwanted firearms on a no-questions-asked basis. Trained volunteers will disable and destroy the guns and then shape them into functional garden tools.   Scott and Staci Marrese-Wheeler visited the WORT studios to tell Monday 8 o’Clock Buzz host Brian Standing more about how Madisonians can follow the biblical teaching to bring violence to an end. Scott has organized many Guns to Garden Tools events and is running this one. Staci is the Director of the Eastmorland Community Center where this Saturday’s event will take place. The Guns to Garden Tools event takes place Saturday, September 28 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Eastmorland Community Center, 3565 Tulane Avenue in Madison. Other organizations that promote gun violence prevention are the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship and The Farley Center, which will host a Musicians for Gun Sense Concert that same day.     Election Stolen! A Report on Venezuelan Affairs with Commentary on Cub...

    Ever since the Cold War, the United States has done its best to thwart or overturn left-leaning or Marxist governments in the Western hemisphere.  However, two particular thorns in the U.S. side, Cuba and Venezuela, have largely resisted multiple efforts to install governments more friendly to perceived U.S. interests. Given all that history, and given all the bias and propaganda about these two Latin American nations, it is difficult for even discerning news consumers to find accurate and detailed information about what is actually going on in those nations. To redress that news black hole, Monday Buzz host Brian Standing spoke to Andres Sebastian-Pertierra, a historian and PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a graduate of Havana University. Pertierra lives in Havana, where he studies Marxist historiography and the history of capitalism.     Strongman Dystopia

    Ruth Ben-Ghiat, Professor of History and Italian Studies at NYU, has written a book, Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present, in which she explains what modern authoritarian leaders have in common with each other and how their plans follow the typical script of fascism developed a hundred years earlier.  This is an interview that Ms. Ben-Ghiat did with 8 O’Clock Buzz host Tony Castañeda earlier this year.  Don Trump, Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orban and Benjamin Netanayhu are the current reincarnations of this personality type who promote a “leader cult” that utilizes the authoritarian playbook of victimization and avenging savior.     Bike Share Madison

    An agreement is in place for Bicycle Transit Systems (BTS) to acquire BCycle from Trek which currently operates the bike sharing market in Madison.  Alison Cohen, founder of BTS, joins the 8 O’Clock Buzz to talk about the transition and her company’s mission to get more people on bikes.  The acquisition will make BTS the only vertically integrated docked bike share company in North America.  But Ms. Cohen wants to assure users in Madison that their goal is not to increase profits for BTS, but rather to encourage bicycle use by offering an affordable and reliable bike sharing experience.  As the great philosopher once sang, get on your bikes and ride!     Sharing is Caring

    As election season heats up, it’s important not to forget about the important local items that you’ll be asked to vote for on November 5. To that end, Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway talked to Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz hosts Tony Castañeda and Eli Wilz about a referendum on the ballot which asks voters to allow the city of Madison to raise property taxes. Another property tax hike will be a tough pill to swallow for homeowners who already await their December tax bills with trepidation that borders on dread. Mayor Rhodes-Conway brings some historical context to the conversation this morning, explaining what “shared revenue” is and how, under Republican control, the State Legislature allocates shared revenue to Madison at a rate of just $29 per resident; (compared to most Wisconsin cities which receive $195 per resident) only 40% of what the city is owed by the state. It’s a shortfall that could easily be covered by the State’s $3 billion+ surplus, and would go a long way toward bridging Madison’s projected $22 million budget deficit.     Tom Kastle Describes Bringing Stories of a Legendary Great Lakes Pirat...

    We’ve all heard of the exploits and dastardly deeds of Blackbeard, Annie Bonny, William Kidd or Calico Jack who plundered the seas in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.  But how many of us know of the tales of pirates like Dan Seavey, who operated a bit further inland, on North America’s third coast, in the early twentieth century? Musician and actor Tom Kastle has made a career recalling stories of the Great Lakes in music and on the stage, and now brings a new work to audiences, a one-man show entitled “Dan Seavey, Confessions of a Great Lakes Pirate” which plays this Saturday, September 21st at 7:00 p.m. at Muso, 2040 Winnebago Street in Madison. Tom paid a visit to WORT studios to tell Monday Buzz host Brian Standing about the show and even slipped into character while he regaled listeners with some of Seavey’s crooked and colorful adventures.
