In this episode, Finbarr and Erin chat with associate professor and author, Sheila Killian. Her passion for sustainability and social good is evident throughout her writing and teaching.

Sheila is a writer based outside Limerick City. She was born in Roscommon, in the dead centre of Ireland, and now teaches at the University of Limerick. Her fiction, poetry and travel writing have won awards in Ireland and the UK, and her work has been broadcast on RTE Radio. She is a member of ⁠Writepace⁠, and spends as much time as she can by the sea.



Her first novel, Something Bigger, was published in July, 2021 by Caritas Press

Professor Killian is section co-editor of the Journal of Business Ethics, and associate editor of Accounting Forum. She serves on the editorial boards of Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal; Accounting, Finance & Governance Review; and Critical Perspectives on Accounting. Her research is mainly qualitative, and addresses issues of social sustainability, accountability and the common good, with a focus on professional expertise, social justice, tax policy and business school education.

Sheila teaches corporate finance and corporate social responsibility, mainly at the postgraduate level. She has also taught these subjects at Aalto University in Finland and at the University of the Witwatersrand and Rhodes University in South Africa.

She is currently the Director, of Principles for Responsible Management Education at the Kemmy Business School. Her past roles include Assistant Dean, Research; Head of Department; Course Director; and Head of AACSB Accreditation. Prior to joining the University of Limerick, She worked as a tax advisor with Arthur Andersen, KPMG and Ernst & Young, and in air finance and educational software development. Her primary degree is in Maths, from NUI Galway. She holds a masters in Business Studies from UCC, and a PhD in Taxation from UCD.



Sheila also has qualifications in international teaching from IMD, and in CSR from the ILO and Boston College. Professionally, she qualified as a Chartered Accountant and as an associate of the Institute of Taxation of Ireland. She has published numerous peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters and is the author of Corporate Social Responsibility: a Guide with Irish Experiences.
