When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times by Pema Chödrön

When we sit down to meditate and take an honest look at our minds, there is a tendency for it to become a rather morbid and depressing project. We can lose all sense of humour and sit with the grim determination to get to the bottom of this stinking mess. After a while, when people have been practicing that way, they begin to feel so much guilt and distress that they just break down, and they might say to someone they trust, “Where’s the joy in all of this?” Pema Chödrön is an American Buddhist monk and principle teacher of the Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia. The Enzo Circle has been reading her book, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times [our reading list is chosen on recommendations by participants]. What you are listening to is an edited excerpt from the live session. You will not hear the voices of participants as sometimes people share deeply personal insights, thoughts, experiences and we maintain confidentiality of each member. Members attend worldwide. Sutra 2: Mental Patterns Cease

Sutra 6: Five Ways by Which Perception is Modified

प्रमाण विपर्यय विकल्प निद्रा स्मृतयः ॥६॥ pramāṇa viparyaya vikalpa nidrā smṛtayaḥ ॥6॥ “The five-fold modifications of the mind are right knowledge, wrong knowledge, imagination, sleep and memory”. The purpose of this sutra is to explain the modifications or vrittis, to understand to what level our perception is shaped by vrittis, that in fact perception itself is vritti, before undertaking the study of yoga. Sutra 4 says, वृत्तिसारूप्यमितरत्र ॥ vṛttisārūpyamitaratra || If the Purusa is established in itself, then what is the state of consciousness in the waking state? Sutra 5: Painful & non-painful modifications

Sutra 8: No Match! Reality & perception error

विपर्ययो मिथ्याज्ञानमतद्रूपप्रतिष्ठम् ॥८॥ viparyayo mithyā jñānam atad rūpa pratiṣṭham ॥8॥ “Unreal cognition is the knowing of the unreal, possessed of a form not its own” The purpose of this sutra is to explain what is wrong knowledge, how it is different from right knowledge or even imagination, and how it affects us.
