When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times by Pema Chödrön

When we sit down to meditate and take an honest look at our minds, there is a tendency for it to become a rather morbid and depressing project. We can lose all sense of humour and sit with the grim determination to get to the bottom of this stinking mess. After a while, when people have been practicing that way, they begin to feel so much guilt and distress that they just break down, and they might say to someone they trust, “Where’s the joy in all of this?” Pema Chödrön is an American Buddhist monk and principle teacher of the Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia. The Enzo Circle has been reading her book, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times [our reading list is chosen on recommendations by participants]. What you are listening to is an edited excerpt from the live session. You will not hear the voices of participants as sometimes people share deeply personal insights, thoughts, experiences and we maintain confidentiality of each member. Members attend worldwide. Sutra 2.11 : Meditation

YOGASUTRAS | SADHNAPADA | SUTRA 2.11 ध्यान हेयाः तद्वृत्तयः ॥११॥ dhyāna-heyāḥ tat-vṛttayaḥ ||11|| “Their modifications are destroved by meditation.” The purpose of this sutra is to explain how meditation destroys the seed of afflictions. Sutra 6: Five Ways by Which Perception is Modified

प्रमाण विपर्यय विकल्प निद्रा स्मृतयः ॥६॥ pramāṇa viparyaya vikalpa nidrā smṛtayaḥ ॥6॥ “The five-fold modifications of the mind are right knowledge, wrong knowledge, imagination, sleep and memory”. Sutra 2.12: Birth & Rebirth

PATANJALI’S YOGASUTRAS | SADHNAPADA | SUTRA 2.12 क्लेशमूलः कर्माशयो दृष्टादृष्टजन्मवेदनीयः ॥१२॥ kleśa-mūlaḥ karma-āśayaḥ-dṛṣta-adṛṣta-janma-vedanīyaḥ ||12|| “The vehicle of actions has its origin in afflictions, and is experienced in visible-and invisible births.” The purpose of this sutra is to explain that afflictions give rise to actions which give rise to present and future births and their states.
