▸ Trump’s tariffs push global stocks lower as investors weigh impact
▸ Disappointing outlook from Amazon also drags Wall Street lower
▸ Core government bonds rally sharply after weaker than expected US jobs data
Global stock markets fell yesterday as a new series of US trade tariffs prompted investors to take profits after a dramatic recovery from trade war lows while jobs data pointed to a weakening US economy.
Wall Street's blue-chip S&P 500 index was 1.7 per cent lower by the early afternoon in New York while the techheavy Nasdaq Composite slid 1.9 per cent.
A disappointing outlook from Amazon dragged the US market lower and the tech giant's share price dived 7.9 per cent.
Across the Atlantic, the region-wide Stoxx Europe 600 stock index dropped 1.9 per cent as investors digested dozens of new tariffs against trading partners.
Frankfurt's Xetra Dax index was down 2.7 per cent and the Cac 40 index in Paris retreated 2.9 per cent.
Trump's latest moves revived worries over the threat to global trade for investors who have largely shrugged off this risk in recent weeks after a string of trade deals between the US and other big economies.
Many of the tariffs announced were in line with letters sent by President Donald Trump to trading partners last month. But some countries such as Switzerland were hit harder than expected.
