Are you longing for better relationships with your family and friends?

Are you a busy mom, trying to find balance between caring for your family and meeting your own needs?

Do you beat yourself up for not meeting expectations, or are you wondering, “How did I get here?”

Do you want to find peace in your home and within yourself?

We are so happy you have found us!! This is the Bettys podcast, where we will give you tools to create better connections with your family and friends, to find a more healthy balance in your life, and to empower you with confidence for your own journey through life and faith. Hi, we’re Mary and Alexis. We are in-laws and girlfriends, seeking more mindfulness and health in our lives, moving past traumas and trying to keep up with everyday demands. We both found ourselves burned out from people-pleasing, unable to set boundaries and struggling with our priorities in the chaos of midlife. This made us feel disconnected from our relationships, our environment, and from ourselves.

We learned about mindset and rewiring unhelpful thought patterns through therapy and coaching, and lots of books and podcasts have helped us navigate our self-help journeys. We have also found ways to improve our relationships, create healthy boundaries, and feel more balanced in our lives.

We found peace with our past selves, love for who we are today, and hope for where we are going, along with a deep friendship with each other. Then we realized our humorous and heartfelt conversations could expand to a greater sisterhood, and decided to invite you into our chats through podcasting.

So If you are anything like our Granny Betty, and you want to develop deeper connections with loved ones, to work on finding a healthier balance in all areas of your life, to upgrade your mindset and confidence, all while being entertained and empowered by your girlfriends, then this podcast is for you.

If you like random outbursts of song, conversation that’s deep and a little squirrelly, and don’t mind lots of laughter and tears as we work through some hard times, then you are definitely a Betty. Are you ready?

    137 - Emotional Immaturity

    137 - Emotional Immaturity

Hello, Queens! We start today’s episode with a Mama Ximena tip of the day/pearl of wisdom: “Be patient with yourself. Wait until the water is clear–then you can think. Don’t try to think in a whirlwind.” Or a whirlpool. How’s Feral February going for you? Lexy is dejunking, to help make her psyche as strong and brilliant as possible. And Mary will never pass up a chance to plug Gretchen Rubin, who says that outer order leads to inner calm. Read her manifesto here, and check out her book Outer Order, Inner Calm here. (And here’s a link to our ever-expanding Amazon book recommendations!)

Mary has been thinking about how the concept of “Fight, Flight, or Freeze’ can apply to many different situations–from housekeeping to emotional immaturity. She mentions again the We Can Do Hard Things podcast, particularly the two-part series on emotional immaturity (episodes 263 and 264) with Clinical Psychologist Dr. Lindsay C. Gibson. Listen here on Apple or here on Spotify.

We refer to the “Islands of Intelligence” theory (read more about it here and here), and how different people can be geniuses at different things. But as the saying goes: "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid" (often attributed to Einstein, but nobody is really sure. See this USA Today article written about it).

Here’s the link the article from Om Swami called Four Kinds of Maturity. And here’s the link to the article from verywellhealth.com about Emotional Immaturity.

    136 - Disappointment

    136 - Disappointment

Hello, Queens! Alexis and Mary are talking about how many people may disappoint us, and how difficult it can be to give ourselves permission to disappoint others. The solution is not always in the pulling of weeds, but possibly in allowing ourselves to be in our ‘disappoint everybody’ era.

Lexy talks about The Courage To Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi. As usual, here is a list of all our book recommendations here on Amazon. Mary mentions the film (500) Days of Summer, and in particular this clip of Expectations vs. Reality. We also talk about boundaries and beliefs.

Our challenge this week is to look objectively at yourself and your relationships, goals and career, and figure out what belief system you are using to support your fear of disappointment. What is disappointment doing for you? Is it motivating you, or is it shutting you down?

135 - Breathwork, Bridgerton, and Being ALL THE THINGS

135 - Breathwork, Bridgerton, and Being ALL THE THINGS

Greetings, Queens! Alexis and Mary are recording at 1:30am, and we’re a little loopy after doing a heavy breathwork session. We may or may not have new merch that says: “Fire Crotch. Give me a meat stick.”

Mary talks a little about her obsession with Bridgerton on Netflix, especially Season 3, which just debuted last week. They are based on a book series by Julia Quinn, which you can find here. Mary hasn’t read the books, so she can’t exactly recommend them, but (as per usual), here are all of our book recommendations here on Amazon. But the books, plus the ingenious golden touch of the incomparable Shonda Rhimes, equals magic. We do give some ***SPOILERS*** so don’t hate!

    134 - Big Magic Attic

    134 - Big Magic Attic

Greetings, Queens! Alexis and Mary are recording remotely, while Lexy is driving, so the sound quality is not the greatest. Thanks for bearing with us!

Mary talks about her trip to Denver, and about a book with a very interesting premise: The Husbands by Holly Gramazio. She also talks more about Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert. As always, here are all of our book recommendations here on Amazon. Mary listens to most of her audiobooks on Libby, but the audio versions of these books are available everywhere as well.

Alexis might need to write a book about a “Magic Addict,” who misinterprets your wishes and gives you random things . . . which sounds a little like Beetlejuice, but has the potential to be really funny as well. Now, if Mary could stop saying “Magic Addict’ instead of “Magic Attic,” that would be helpful.

We talk about the “Man in the Arena” quote from Theodore Roosevelt. You can read it in its entirety here. We also talk about guilt and how we use it to justify taking care of ourselves or not.

133 - Why is Fear Holding You Back? (Big Magic, Part One)

133 - Why is Fear Holding You Back? (Big Magic, Part One)

Greetings, Queens! Alexis and Mary are starting off with some vocabulary lessons, but it doesn’t take us too long to sift through the rocks to get to the gold of this episode. The best part is that you get to pick what is the gold in your life!

Mary talks about a wonderful book purchased last year, but which she hadn’t read until she listened to it (twice!). It’s called Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert. As always, here are all of our book recommendations here on Amazon. Mary listens to most of her audiobooks on Libby, but the audio version is available everywhere as well.

We talk about our fears, about what’s holding us back, and why we feel like we need permission to do certain things in our lives.

132 - Things That Matter with Tracy Munson

Hello Hello, Queens! We’re here to “undo that mood and give you a vibe,” so we hope you are in for a fun ride! Alexis and Mary are joined today by our friend Tracy Munson, who works in the Chamber of Commerce in Cache Valley, Utah. She talks about authenticity, being a Christian, adoption, identity, active listening, and some other interesting topics. She mentions being a guest on another podcast, called Hearing the Unheard from Paz Wellness. Listen here on Apple and here on Spotify.

Tracy also mentions the show “This is Us,” which she really resonates with. As of the time this episode is published, you can stream it here on Netflix. We also talk about playlists . . . and what your playlists say about you!

Mary mentions a couple of her favorite podcasts: Happier with Gretchen Rubin and Awesome with Alison. She also mentions an excellent audiobook called The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes and the incredible author/narrator Julia Whelan. As always, here are all of our book recommendations here on Amazon.

Tracy talks about her own core values:
    Trust my gut. Trust myself.
“Faith really matters. There’s more to life than just this…[and] life goes on”
    Kindness, integrity, and authenticity matter.
