Episode 159: People Pleasing Isn’t Pleasing Anyone

Most of us have a deep, biologic instinct to please other people. Not only does people pleasing feel necessary to maintain good relationships, sometimes we even think that it is altruistic and noble and good to put someone else’s opinions, needs, and preferences above our own.
But the truth is that people pleasing creates resentful, inauthentic relationships that are based on pretending and lying. This not only creates tension between us and the people in our lives, it also erodes our relationship with ourselves.
So how do we reconcile the things we want with the things other people want from us? How do we honor our own needs while fulfilling our desire to help and serve others?
On today’s podcast episode, I’m sharing why people pleasing keeps us from the loving, authentic relationships we want to have, how to overcome your need to people please, and how to prioritize to your own desires while still loving and caring for other people.

Make the Most of Your Life

Make the Most of Your Life

Our brain’s number one job is to keep us alive. All the thoughts that it offers us day in and day out are meant to protect us in order to meet this objective. However, the very thoughts that our brain offers to keep us alive are also the very thoughts that can keep us from actually living the life we really want to live.
Over the past month, I’ve had some experiences that have reminded me again how lucky I am to have the chance to be alive and that the only thing that keeps me from boldly getting everything I want from that life are the fears and doubts of my own brain.
Today on the podcast, I am sharing three lessons I have learned over the past month that have given me a new appreciation for my life and a new perspective on where my brain is holding me back, to help you make the most of the earth life experience you have been given.

Meeting Your Own Needs as a Mom

Meeting Your Own Needs as a Mom

There probably isn’t a job with more responsibility or higher expectations than motherhood. However, our thoughts about our responsibilities as a mom and whether or not we are meeting the expectations of the job can make mothering even harder.
What we sometimes forget is that we are mothering other humans. And those other humans get as much agency and choice as we do.
When we tangle our work and our results as parents with our children’s choices, we can inadvertently put too much pressure on ourselves and our children and this can create strain and pain in our relationships.
In today’s episode of the podcast, I help you see where you may be unknowingly delegating your validation, success, and happiness in motherhood to your children and how to think in a way that allows you to meet your own emotional needs so you can get more joy out of your sacred work as a mother.

Looking Unto Christ in Every Thought with Dennis Deaton

Looking Unto Christ in Every Thought with Dennis Deaton

Every human being struggles with thoughts and feelings of doubt and fear and discouragement and if you have listened to my podcast for any length of time you have heard me explain that this is because of the way our brains are biologically programmed. Noticing what’s wrong with us is our brain’s way of ensuring our survival.
However, this is just one way of looking at our experience with negative thoughts. On today’s podcast, I interview my dad, Dennis Deaton, about his new book in which he offers the idea that our thoughts are actually coming from two opposing sources: from God and from the adversary.

In our discussion, we talk about our different perspectives on the origin of our thoughts, the power in recognizing that we are not our thoughts, and the importance of overcoming our negative thoughts and choosing on purpose what we want to think so we can move forward in the face of fear, doubt and discouragement.

God is Not Mad at You

God is Not Mad at You

God and the grace he offers us is the biggest source of strength we have in challenging times, but most of us aren’t accessing that strength and asking for his help because we think he’s mad or disappointed or frustrated with us.
Nothing could be further from the truth and understanding God’s infinite love and constant approval of you will change your relationship with him.
In today’s podcast I’m sharing four ways to think about how God feels about you that will allow you to give up your shame and regret and turn to him for help and strength and confidence as you change and grow.

See the Wonder of Your Life

See the Wonder of Your Life

Your brain’s really good at seeing what’s gone wrong. But that is only ever half of the story.
There is also a whole lot of wonder happening in your life right now and in today’s podcast, I want to put all your attention on that.
Your life is a gift, exactly as it is, and no matter what’s happening, no matter where we are or what reality we are living, there is always the wonder of growth, of choice, of creation, of starting over, and of love available to every one of us.
Chris Ballas wrote, “The goal of adulthood is to let go of the other possible existences and to make the best of the one. A successful adult is one who understands that it doesn’t matter which life you ultimately pick, only that you live it well.”
In today’s episode I’m showing you how to embrace the wonder found in your one life so that you can live it the way you want to.
