A volunteer discovered a new non-native species in Lake Champlain. Officials say the golden clam has the potential to become an invasive species if it ends up damaging the lake's ecosystem. Also: State Senator Dan Stec isn't ruling out running in an anticipated special election for Elise Stefanik's seat in Congress.

11/20/24: A river runs through it

Like in many North Country villages, Saranac Lake's riverfront has gone neglected and underutilized. A group of paddlers is trying to build park with a white water wave along the Saranac River, but they still need to raise a lot of money. Also: U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stopped by SUNY Canton Monday to promote a cyber security program that helps pay for students' tuition but isn't getting enough applicants.

11/19/24: Battling New York's biggest forest fire in years

A drought warning is in place across much of southern New York as the Jennings Creek wildfire has burned thousands of acres and forced people to leave their homes. A conversation with an Adirondack Forest Ranger who's serving as a crew chief to fight the wildfire in Orange County. Also: For the first time, Cape Vincent's only grocery is closing for the winter, leaving a gap for the local food pantry and people in the community who can't drive.

11/15/24: An historic Adirondack summer camp closes

Even though it's "Forever Wild", the Adirondack Park keeps evolving. The APA allowed a garnet mine in North Creek to continue operating for decades. But a popular Boy Scout camp that's been in operation for more than 50 years is closing.

11/14/24: Will Airbnbs return to the long-term rental market?

A new pilot program is exploring a different approach to the region’s housing crisis. Three Adirondack nonprofits have teamed up to help homeowners turn existing short-term rentals, like Airbnb and VRBO, into more traditional long-term rentals. Also: Adirondack green groups react to Lee Zeldin's nomination to head the Environmental Protection Agency.

11/13/24: Can the Adirondacks become more diverse?

The Adirondacks' population decline is in part tied to its whiteness. People of color often haven't felt welcome to visit or eventually move here. We look at efforts by the Adirondack Diversity Initiative to change that. Also: The Plattsburgh city council voted against launching an investigation into the police department and mayor’s office.

11/12/24: The Stefanik domino effect

Republican Elise Stefanik's nomination to serve as UN Ambassador could trigger a cascade of political maneuvering in a special congressional election. We look at Stefanik's trajectory and how Republicans and Democrats may field a new candidate. Also: Two Adirondack second homeowners have bought the Big Tupper Ski area. It was auctioned off to the highest bidder last week.
