    137 - Chris Ballew (the Presidents of the United States of America) In episode 137 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, Host, James Patrick Regan speaks with singer/bassist/guitarist Chris Ballew from the Presidents of the United States of America and he also performs as Caspar Babypants. In their conversation he covers: Growing up in Seattle with his mom’s classical influences and his father’s country influences… and his mom going in to the “pit” at his early shows. Chris takes us through his musical journey: high school in Seattle college in New York and busking in Boston and then back to Seattle to start the Presidents. Chris takes through his gear Harmony’s Silvertone’s all set up untraditionally with between 2 and 4 strings. Chris also tells us about his Presidents rig which was an Epiphone SG style with just two strings tuned to C# and G#. Chris tells us a bit about his musical contemporaries in the Seattle area as well as New York and Boston. Chris takes us through his other musical projects, the music he created for music libraries, Caspar Babypants and his solo space pop albums. . In their conversation Roger tells us about his new album “Long Shadows” and his production techniques and the gear he uses as well as a discussion of his mentor producer/guitarist Larry Campbell. Roger shares with us his childhood, growing up on Long Island and getting sent to Arizona after stealing the family car. Roger takes us through his band experience after returning to New York and his brushes with greatness as well as setting up a studio in his friend’s mom’s basement and how he taught himself to record. Roger tells us about how his life took a left turn and what brought him back to music through a chance meeting with a babysitter. Roger discusses the logistics of rehearsing and playing in the New York City area. Finally Roger takes us through some of the highlights of his guitar collection.     135 - Elgin Park (Michael Andrews) the Greyboy Allstars In episode 135 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with Elgin Park (aka Michael Andrews) guitarist with the Greyboy Allstars, he’s also a producer, television and film score composer. In their conversation Elgin covers what the Greyboy Allstars music is and describes a couple new releases in the works. Elgin tells us about the formation of the Greyboy Allstars as a band behind DJ Greyboy and his beginnings as a guitarist. Elgin describes his first guitars a Harmony Rocket and his local music store Freedom Music in downtown San Diego where he bought a ‘58 sunburst Fender Music Master and then a Gibson SG jr and describes his amp a Fender Harvard tweed that his sister’s boyfriend left at the family’s home. Elgin also describes his current guitars that he uses with the Greyboy Allstars, a mid 60’s Gibson ES 175 that he got from a show guitarist in Las Vegas and an early 50’s Guild T 100. Elgin takes us through the rest of his guitars in his studio and some special amps including Carol Kaye’s bass amp he bought from her and an amp he got from Ry Cooder. Elgin (Michael Andrews) then tells us about his scoring work which began in earnest with the TV show Freaks and Geeks, and his work with Judd Apatow including “Bridesmaids” and quite a few documentaries including “20 Feet from Stardom”. Elgin also highlights a guitar he bought from the want ads of Vintage Guitar Magazine in the 1990’s sight unseen from Florida. .     134 - Reed Caldwell (Songbirds Foundation) In episode 134 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine host, James Patrick Regan speaks with guitarist and executive director of the Songbirds Foundation in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Reed Caldwell. In their conversation Reed tells us about the foundation how began as a museum and a foundation for bringing guitar into schools and how the focus changed to mostly the foundation teaching guitar in schools in eight states. Reed tells of the guitars they currently have on display: Joe Maphis’s guitar, one of Chuck Berry’s guitars and a guitar owned and played by Dolly Parton. Reed tells about the building the foundation owns which includes a performance space, a studio as well as the displayed guitars. Reed takes us through some of the foundations programs such as the Right To Rock program which team’s students with songwriters who teach the fundamentals of songwriting and then after writing a song the students get to hear their songs recorded by professional band. Reed shares the insights into the guitar collection which was up to 300 instruments and where the few guitars they’ve sold to build their endowment, were sold (Well Strung Guitars in New York City) Reed talks about the partnership with Gibson and Epiphone to provide guitars at a reduced price to the foundation to give to the students. They are also partnered with Ernie Ball and Guitar Center. Reed also explains how donated guitars are auctioned off or sold to provide the students guitars. Reed tells us about his background and how he ended up in his position as the executive director of Songbirds Foundation.
