Yes, it’s been a while. Today is the last day of 2023, which prompted me to break the long pause and pick up where I left off in haste. Last episode was recorded 5 months ago in mid-July. I promised my listeners useful expressions while travelling in Japan, which remains unfulfilled. Don’t worry, I will get to that in early 2024.
皆さんお久しぶりです。今日は2023年最終日です。大晦日に慌ててポッドキャストを更新しております。前回のエピソードは7月の中旬で５ヶ月も経ってしまいました。日本旅行中の便利な表現の紹介を予告しておりましたが、もうしばらくお待ちください。

Today, I’d like to ponder the word 「天職 ten shoku」, which means calling or vocation in English. The reason I chose this topic is because I recently got a job, 10 months after I got laid off in December 2022. This year has given me many teachable moments, and I feel very thankful for the wisdom I gained in 2023.
さて、今回は天職について考えたいと思います。英語ではcalling又はvocationと言います。このテーマを選んだ理由は、ちょうど一年前の2022年12月にレイオフをうけ 、最近、１０ヶ月越しで再就職できたからです。今年は数多くの試練を乗り越えたと思います。今となっては、今年得た一つ一つの教訓をありがたく感じます。

The word 「天職 ten shoku」consists of 『天 ten』which means heaven, and 「職 shoku」 occupation. The word vocation comes from Latin, which means to summon or to call. It’s interesting to see that these words both English and Japanese express a similar idea that people are being called by God for these positions.
「天職」は文字通り天から授かった職業を表します。英語でcallingとvocationと言います。Vocationはラテン語で呼ぶ、又は召喚することを指します。日本語も英語も、神から呼ばれ、与えられた職業という概念をよく表していると思います。

I used to feel incomplete because I haven’t found my vocation yet. But then I came realized that we are all trying to figure out one step at a time, one day at a time.
以前は、天職がわからない自分の未熟さを感じていましたが、最近になって、私たちは皆、毎日一歩一歩歩み、学んでいる事に気づきました。

Lately, I feel like my day is fruitful when I find one person to show kindness and another person to thank.
誰かに親切にし、誰かに感謝できたらその一日は有意義だったと思う今日この頃です。

このテーマはタイムリーだと思います。なぜなら、先週末カナダで相次いでいた山火事の煙がニューヨークに流れ込み、6月6日から8日にかけて世界最悪レベルの大気汚染が観測されたからです。本日6月9日現在、ニューヨーク市はやっと青空と共に空気も正常値に戻りつつあります。

This episode is actually timely when New Yorkers were
experiencing the worst air quality in the world from June 6th to 8th
due to Canadian wildfires that took place earlier last week. As of today, June
9th, the New York skies are blue again with air quality back at
normal levels.

さて、漢字の「気」についてシリーズでお送りしています。
We are taking a dive at the kanji character “ki” in a series.

前回は漢字の「気」が表す意味を大きく５つに分けてみました。
In the previous episode, I divided into 5 categories for meanings of the kanji “ki”.


今回はエネルギーを表す熟語、「元気」と「病気」に注目したいと思います。
In this episode, I’d like to focus on the words “genki,” energetic and “byouki,” ill.

元気は気が元に戻ると書いて「元気」です。
“Genki” consists of the words, “gen,” origin, and “ki,” energy.

「元気」という言葉は、私たちの元の状態は「元気」であることを教えてくれます。
The word gives you an idea that our original state is well and energetic.

一方で、病気は気が病にかかって「病気」と書きます。
On the other hand, the word “byouki,” ill consists of the words, “byo,” ill, and “ki,” energy.

「病は気から。」と言いますが、健康状態は気の持ちようで変わると言われます。
There is even an expression, which goes 「病は気から。」, which means illness arises from sickness of the spirit.


「元気」と「病気」を使った例文で練習しましょう。
Here are some useful sentences you can practice using “genki” and “bryoki.”

「お元気ですか。」
How are you?
「病気にならないように、よく食べて、よく寝てください。」
Please eat well and sleep well to stay away from any illness.

前回予告した通り、漢字の「気」をテーマにお送りしたいと思います。As I stated in the previous episode, we are looking at the kanji “Ki” in this episode.
この漢字の読み方は３通りあり、それは「キ」・「ケ」・「ゲ」ですが、ほとんどの場合、「キ」と読みます。
There are three ways to pronounce the kanji character, which are “ki”, “ke”, and “ge”. Most of the time, the word is pronounced “ki”.
さて、漢字の「気」が表す意味を大きく５つに分けてみました。I have categorized 5 different characteristics of the word, “ki”.
1. エネルギー、魂：energy and spirit
Here are the examples. 例は以下の通りです。

2. 空気: Air

What is 「気」? The kanji character「気」expresses various elements, but ultimately, it represents energy.
We are looking closely at the kanji 「気」 and learn some words with it in a series.

「気」は様々な意味がありますが、結局はエネルギーを表します。今回はシリーズにわたり漢字の気を含む言葉に注目していきたいと思います。

The character 「気」 is versatile for a reason. I would like to close this introduction episode with two quotes by two brilliant minds.
「気」は万能な漢字ですが、それには理由があります。二人の天才達のお言葉をお借りして今回のエピソードを締めさせていただきます。


Albert Einstein allegedly said “everything is energy and that’s all there is to it.”
アルバート・アインシュタインは「万物はエネルギーであり、それがすべて。」と言ったとされています。

Nikola Tesla said “if you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”

We are staying with the topic, which is money.
前回予告した通り、お金と漢字の「貝」の関係についてお話ししたいと思います。
As announced in the previous episode, we are talking about the connection between money and the kanji for sea shell, “kai”.

お金に関する漢字は「貝」が付くのはなぜでしょうか。
Why are there many money-related kanji characters have the sea shell element?
それは、約3000年前、中国では「宝貝（たからがい）」が、お金の代わりに使われていたからです。
It is because specific seashells were used as currency starting about 3,000 years ago in China.

例は以下の通りです。概要欄をご参照ください。
Here are the examples. Please refer to the show notes.
「財」ざい、zai, wealth
「貯」ちょ、cho, savings
「貸」たい、tai, lending
「買」ばい、bai, buying

Here are the two-character words:
二字熟語の例は以下の通りです。
「通貨」つうか、tsuka, currency
「財産」ざいさん、zaisan, assets
「貯金」ちょきん、chokin, savings
「貿易」ぼうえき、boueki, imports and exports
「費用」ひよう、hiyou, cost

次に、「買う」という言葉と漢字に注目してみましょう。
Let’s focus on the word and character of buy, 「買う」.

「買う」とドイツ語のkaufenは音が似ていますが、それぞれの語源は違います。日本語の「買う」は品物を手に入れたりサービスを受けたりするために、お金と交換するところから、「かふ・かう（交・替・代・換）」と考えられています。一方、Kaufenの語源はラテン語のcaupo「宿屋の主人」「商人」です。

The sounds to buy in Japanese and German, “kau” and “kaufen” are similar. The former is believed to derive from the word exchange, “kau”. The latter is believed to derive from the Latin word innkeeper or shopkeeper, caupo.

買うの音読みはバイですが、英語のbuyと似ています。しかし、これもまた、単なる偶然のようです。
There is another coincidence that we see in the kanji for “buy”. There are two ways to read the character, which are 「かう」 and 「バイ」. This also seems to be just a coincidence.
