Welcome 2023!

Well, ring out the old and ring in the new. It is a new year, and a new look for The Way-Back Music Machine. We have reached episode 82! This year, we thought we would do something a little different. We will be going through the Week That Was day by day, starting on Sunday. And, of course, since The Beatles feature prominently in our show and rock and roll history, there has to be an 8th day ("Eight Days A Week", right?). This week we explore Bill Haley and His Comets hit "Rock Around The Clock", talk about South Park (yes, they had a hit), and a salute George Martin and Malcom Young, both of whom have birthdays this week. We also take a look at a poll in Liverpool in 1962, and talk about The Supremes. Finally, on the eighth day we look at a failed audition. Actually it is THE failed audition. 81. New Year's Eve

80. Holiday Special

Episode 80 of The Way-Back Music Machine is very special for a few reasons. It is number 80, it is our second Christmas episode and it is the last episode of the year. And what a year it has been! But for this show we look at Jimmy Buffet, Johnny Mathis, Bing Crosby and The Sex Pistols. Are they connected? Not really but you have to listen to the show to learn about a special Christmas concert, the history of "White Christmas", "When A Child Is Born" and all about Jimmy. 79. Shreveport December 15, 1956

Here we are, Road Trip 79 for The Way-Back Music Machine. This is a fun one, some odd stories and some great chat. First we look the first Christmas number one in the U.K. in 1955. It is not who you think! Then hear about an odd injury and story regarding Z Z Top's Dusty Hill. Finally, The Four Seasons have a hit for the second time with the same song, of course it is a remix, but the coincidence will leave you amazed! Then we examine the crazy world of collecting and memorabilia. All that, plus charts, great conversation and we hear about Elvis during our Memphis to Merseyside segment! 78. New York City December 8, 1980

It is hard to believe, but we keep rolling with The Way-Back Music Machine, This is episode 78 and today we pay tribute to John Lennon, who was taken from us on December 8, 1980. After all these years, this date still hits people who lived through it very hard. However, we celebrate, we don't mourn. We want to have some fun with stories about The Beatles. First we look at the release of Band On The Run, an album that was strife with problems from the time the band was to leave for Lagos, Nigeria when two members of the band left. Literally the day before the flight. Then we look at how The Beatles helped pirate radio stations in 1966 (and years after). Finally, John Lennon sent back his MBE in 1969. In 2005, it was found. 77 Kentucky December 1, 1987

Wow, road trip 77, and we are far from running out of gas! This week we look at few more stories than usual and we return to The Weird Files. First up, we look at Nirvana and Kurt Cobain's performance on Top Of The Pops in 1991. What could have been a career destroying move becomes an iconic moment for the show. Then we talk about George Harrison, and how his humour and talent is so missed today. Next it is U2 or The U2s as they had been advertised in 1979 at the iconic Hope And Anchor. Not too many people showed up, but those who did had a great time until a string broke. Finally, a Weird File story about censorship and a teacher Hey, school board, leave that teacher alone.... Then not one, not two, but three Elvis stories for our from Memphis to Merseyside segment. All that, plus charts and talk between two very good friends. This week on The Way-Back Music Machine. 76. Sydney November 18, 2017

We have now made our 76th trip in The Way-Back Music Machine and this week, it is a "day in the life" episode, although it never started out that way. This week, we look at Fats Domino and his debut on The Ed Sullivan show. Then we visit Billy Joel as he celebrates his first number one album. His first, but not his last, but it was the album that broke him worldwide. Finally we pay tribute to Malcom Young (and his brother George). Malcom was a pivotal member of AC/DC and it is a chance to recognize him and the band. All that plus an interesting Memphis To Merseyside segment, charts and excellent chat between friends. 75. Birthday Special

Here we are at road trip 75 for The Way-Back Music Machine. This is a huge achievement, so to celebrate, on this episode, which we call The Birthday Episode, we look at some famous artists and their birthdays. First, we talk about the incredible Joni Mitchell November 7, 1943), who at 78, seems to be making a significant comeback! Then we look at one of the best guitarists alive today, Ms. Bonnie Raitt. A pretty damn great voice too. Born November 8, 1949. Then we talk about Booker T, of Booker T and The MGs. An incredible talent with a brilliant career. He entered the world on November 12, 1944. One year to the day of our next artist. Next, we look at the incomparable Neil Young, born November 12, 1945. What can we say that has not been said before? Check out his archives, the best in rock and roll... Neil Young Archives Finally, we look at the opening (or birth) of the most famous recording studio in the world, at 3 John Street in London. That studio, which was bought in 1929 and opened its doors in 1931. Sir Edward Elgar recorded his famous "Land Of Hope And Glory" there in 1931, but we know it because of The Fab Four.
