What foods contribute to illness? How does your brain and gut work together? Are your kids on multiple medications?

Meet Dana Kay

At a young age Dana’s son was diagnosed with ADHD. His doctor immediately put him on a strong medication to combat it. However, the medication had some side effects which led to another medication that had side effects and so forth. By the age of 5, Dana’s son was on multiple heavy medications to treat his ADHD. She knew there had to be another way. A way to help him without all the drugs. That’s when she started looking into holistic remedies and diet options.

Now, Dana is a Board-Certified Holistic Health and Nutrition Practitioner and the CEO and founder of the ADHD Thrive Institute, and the creator of the ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids program.

Summary

* Medications at an early age

* Backlash

* Worst foods for ADHD

Medication at an early age

ADHD is not caught as easily in girls as it is in boys. Boys have what Dana calls “louder symptoms”. They display signs sooner than girls which gets them on medications a lot sooner also. These young children are prescribed amphetamine medications for their ADHD by a doctor who is supposed to be looking after their best interest. Sometimes multiple medications are prescribed for a condition that can be helped by changing their diets. But doctors don’t profit from changing diets, they profit by distribution of medications that will keep their patients returning for care. But, medication is not the only way.

Backlash

“Not medicating is not neglect”

There are two groups of parents. First is the medication parents who believe in the science of drugs and their benefit for a healthier life. It is the easier route. But, think about the brain/gut connection. How an unhealthy gut contributes to a lack of attention, lack of focus and affects problem solving skills (all part of the frontal lobe). A mass number of kids have been on antibiotics at a very young age. The problem with that is the antibiotics cannot tell the difference between bad bacteria and good bacteria (which our body needs).

The other group is the holistic group that knows medications aren’t always the only way. Who wants their kids on heavy medications for the rest of their lives? We’d hope nobody right? So, they do their research, study, learn everything they possibly can about ADHD and decide to make some decisions of their own. Like paying close attention to everything going into their children’s bodies and making changes where necessary. Not medicating is not neglect. Doing nothing is.

 Worst foods for ADHD

Dana explains the worst foods we consume on a daily basis that affect ADHD. The first is gluten, gluten leads to leaky gut which leads to inflammation, and eventually brain fog and hyperactivity. The second is dairy. 50% of people who are allergic to dairy are also allergic to gluten. To put things into perspective, a calf drinks its mother’s milk and is considered an adult in one year and does not continue drinking the milk. Whereas a human who is considered an adult after 18 years, drinks cow’s milk the whole 18 years. We are the only mammal that continues to drink milk from another mammal. Finally soy, 95% of soy crops are genetically modified
