Analytic Idealism in a Nutshell (Kastrup 2024) - Weekend Book Review

Hey there, and welcome back to Revise and Resubmit. You're listening to our special Weekend Book Review episode, where we explore books that make us rethink, reimagine, and sometimes even rebuild our understanding of the world.

Today, we’re cracking open a book that doesn’t just challenge what we know — it challenges what we think we know about the very fabric of reality. The book is "Analytic Idealism in a Nutshell" by Bernardo Kastrup, published by Iff Books in November 2024.

Now, if you haven’t heard of Bernardo Kastrup, you’re in for a ride. He’s not your everyday philosopher. With PhDs in both philosophy and computer engineering, and a career that’s taken him through some of the top scientific labs in the world, Kastrup brings a unique mind to one of the oldest questions in existence — what is reality?

And his answer? It's bold. It's lucid. It’s unsettling in the best possible way. Kastrup argues that reality isn’t made of stuff — it’s made of mind. Not just your mind or mine, but a broader, deeper, shared mental essence that lies beneath everything. Through metaphors and thought experiments, he makes a radical idea feel strangely intuitive.

So here’s what I’m wondering: If reality is fundamentally mental, what does that mean for the way we treat each other, or even ourselves?

A huge thank you to Bernardo Kastrup for this mind-bending contribution, and to Iff Books for putting it out into the world.
