Book Review: The Wright Brothers by David McCullough
• The Old Jarhead provides career advice from his extensive corporate and military experience. • A book review is featured this month on "The Wright Brothers" by David McCullough, which provides lessons for career success. • Orville and Wilbur Wright, bike shop owners in Ohio, developed one of the first navigable airplanes after studying flight and its mechanics. • To be successful in a career, one must have a passion as well as talent for the job with a potential market to make money off it. • The Wright Brothers had both the passion and the talent necessary and saw potential in the aviation industry's potential market. • The Wright Brothers also realized that control is just as important as power for taking a machine into flight. • Careers can be made more rewarding if one takes control rather than simply pushing ahead with hard work.

Working While Job Hunting: The Smartest Move for Your Career
Welcome to the career podcast with Dennis Guzick, also known as the Old Jarhead. In today's episode, we'll be discussing the importance of work and offering valuable advice based on my nearly 20 years of experience in the corporate world. But before we dive in, let me mention that I'll be having oral surgery today, so let's make the most of it and get started. Now, you might be wondering why we're talking about work in a career podcast. Well, there are a couple of reasons. Firstly, finding work can be challenging, especially if you lack the necessary education or experience that the market demands. Secondly, many governments, particularly in Western Europe, have been passing laws that discourage people from working by providing generous benefits. This begs the question - why work if you can comfortably survive solely on what the government provides? Here's where my advice comes into play. I believe it's important to be a productive member of society and not rely solely on others for your needs. While it may seem appealing to sit around the house for a while, it ultimately does a disservice to your personal growth and fulfillment. But what if finding work is proving difficult? Here are two pieces of advice. Firstly, consider taking a job that may be below your desired status or education level. This will help pay the bills while you continue to search for something better. Don't be afraid to relocate or explore new opportunities - many people in Western Europe have found success by being flexible and taking on challenging or less glamorous jobs. Remember, this is just a temporary solution while you work towards your goals. Secondly, instead of solely focusing on finding that dream job, concentrate on becoming a great candidate. Invest in education and training, network with others, read up on industry trends, and ensure your resume and cover letter are always up to date and impressive. Finally, I want to emphasize that relying on government assistance until you land your ideal job is not a viable long-term solution. It's important to avoid the soul-crushing period of unemployment for an extended period of time. That's it for today's podcast with the Old Jarhead. I hope you found this advice valuable. Don't forget to spread the word about our podcast, as it comes with a money-back guarantee to help boost your career. And if you're in need of further guidance or a career change, consider checking out my book "Find a Job That Fits Your Life" on Amazon. It's an easy read that can be delivered right to your doorstep. Thank you for listening, and best of luck on your career journey!

The XO
• Dennis Guzik, a former combat veteran and author, discussed the Executive Officer (XO) and the qualities they need to have in order to be effective in their role.
• The XO or Deputy needs to understand what the boss wants and have a firm grasp on how the organization runs.
• The XO should focus all of their energy on accomplishing the goals of the organization as defined by the boss.
• Additionally, they should ensure that the staff is running efficiently and settling any disputes without taking up their bosses time.
• The best way to view this relationship is as a partnership based on trust, open communication, understanding and respect.

Great career mentor!
I met Dennis several years ago while he still worked in a corporate setting. Listening to this podcast sends me back to sitting in his office discussing careers and what a successful career looks like. I am forever grateful for what I learned from him, but even more grateful that I can continue to learn from him through his podcast and blog. His advice has undoubtedly helped me excel in my career and find happiness in what I do. I would highly recommend this podcast to everyone looking to grow professionally.
Fresh perspectives and well-reasoned advice
Great podcast! Dennis offers an easy to follow line of thinking and fresh perspective on how to approach work and life. I love that his overall message is centered on happiness as an indicator of success - not money or fame or prestige. I also love that these episodes are short and sweet so I can easily fit them in my day when I have time.
Great advice!
You are a wise man! I agree that finding purpose in everything is key to career (and life) happiness. As you know, we had to deal with career transformations five years ago, but found our purpose in making a better life for the boys. I’m glad you started this podcast, it is good to hear your voice!
