Cubical Ruins ,

Ultimately Grifted

I initially liked this show... histories of weird and wicked people, told with a touch of humor and progressivism. Some of the guests, Billy Wayne Davis and Laci Mosley, were great as well. Those two engaged with the subjects and kept it funny -a credit to their craft. I even liked host Robert Evan’s bad intros and Doritos jokes.

But, ultimately the schtick gets old. BtB seems to be a platform for an insular group of marginal comedians who appropriate socially progressive causes and identity politics to build a fanbase (in lieu of actually being smart or funny). I’m not sure if these remaining guests are affiliated with the producer or if they all hang out in the same social click, but I always wished BtB would bring in new people. The occasional sharp comedian, like Billy Wayne or Laci, is cool. But maybe... Historians? Authors? REAL activists?

Robert’s anti-authoritarianism and grifter debunking are why I subscribed for so long. But, if you listen long enough you’ll find he’s just like most of his second-rate guests. He hawks a brand of performance Leftism for the clicks.

Now I wonder if I’ve been grifted myself for listening as long as I did.

I want to love this podcast.

I very much want to say I love it BUT it’s hard given the ridiculous range of guests. Some are intelligent and amusing to listen to others are shockingly unintelligent and it shows in their desperate attempts at uninformed humor. I skip around a lot to try and find ones I enjoy. Either the host needs to vet guests better or stick to a rotation of ones that have enough background knowledge to have banter land not crash and burn.
