116 Health at Every Size, Biases, and the Anti Diet Approach with Whitney Catalano RDN [Interview]

116 Health at Every Size, Biases, and the Anti Diet Approach with Whitney Catalano RDN [Interview]

Whitney Catalano is a Registered Dietitian specializing in intuitive eating for driven and passionate women who are ready to reclaim their life by breaking up with dieting. She adopts an anti-diet view and stresses connecting with your body’s food preferences, hunger and fullness cues, and finding a weight that is effortless for your body.

    In this episode we discuss:
How social trends around body image set us up for a bad relationship with food, how these things can be passed down from parents to kids. Kids are sponges, and if they see their parents engaging with food in a negative way they will likely develop the same negative food mindsets.
The restriction vs binging pendulum. If you are struggling with binge eating , it may be because you tried to over restricted yourself in the past and vice versa.
Body size is not necessarily an indicator of self control or laziness.
Biases todays body size and how bigger people are shamed from multiple different areas of life , most notably healthcare providers (doctors, nurses, etc)
The inner bully - being a bully to yourself / shaming yourself when you make a bad food decision, the importance of recognizing these thoughts exist, and not always taking them as gospel.

115 Why interpersonal skills are more important than clinical skills with Rafael Salazar

115 Why interpersonal skills are more important than clinical skills with Rafael Salazar

Rafael E. Salazar II, MHS, OTR/L started Rehab U Practice Solutions in 2017 with a single mission: to radically change the way clinicians do business. Healthcare in the US is broken, with regulations and third party payers constantly changing the game while clinicians work to the point of burnout and apathy. Who does this hurt the most? The patients. Rafeal has been working as a consultant helping private practices craft the ultimate patient experience by maximizing patient retention. We also talk about how interpersonal skills are just as important as clinical skills when working with patients.

113 Breaking the Rules and Creating Your Own Path with Katie Duke ACNP-BC [Interview]

113 Breaking the Rules and Creating Your Own Path with Katie Duke ACNP-BC [Interview]

Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, Katie Duke left in her mid 20’s to pursue a feeling inside her that there was “something greater out there”, and that feeling led her to New York City. Ms Duke has 15 years experience in Nursing, with the last 4 years spent working as a Board Certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner specializing in Inpatient Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in New York City at one of the Nation’s top hospitals, Mount Sinai Hospital.

In addition to her full time career as an NP, she also serves as a clinical preceptor to NYU ACNP graduate students, editorial contributor, motivational speaker, mentor, agency represented social media influencer, hosts the “Bad Decisions Podcast”, and is the founder of the “Duke It Up Event” which is an empowerment and mentoring workshop.

Katie has been featured in Emergency Room Nurse on the Primetime ABC Medical Documentary series “NY MED”, and its spinoff, “NY ER” on the Oprah Winfrey Network, TLC, and Discovery Life Channels. Albeit she had a controversial turn on NY Med related to a post on social media, she realized that the best way to work through life’s tough lessons is to own your mistakes. For the last 6 years she has been dedicated to leading others by sharing her good and bad experiences and lessons, and empowering others to embrace and grow from their not so glorious moments.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    - Katie’s story about when she was fired for “trying to do too much” and/or an “insensitive” social media post, how it affected her and fueled her to expose a punitive culture for nurses, and to help others in similar situations
    - Katie’s entrepreneurial journey with her online brand and message for those that don't have it all together (because no one really does)
    - Her advice for HCPs who want to utilize social media to share their story: Know your hospital’s social media policy, be authentically you, be ok with the ups and downs, and don't feel like you need to conform to what’s popular or trending.

112 Holistically Overcoming Stressors in our Environment with Dr. Ron Ehrlich [Interview]

112 Holistically Overcoming Stressors in our Environment with Dr. Ron Ehrlich [Interview]

Dr. Ron Ehrlich, or ‘Dr. Ron’ as he is affectionately known, is one of Australia’s leading holistic health advocates, educators. A holistic dentist, podcaster, and an author with over 35 years of clinical experience, Dr Ron has developed a holistic approach to health and wellness, as well as a comprehensive model of how stress impacts on our lives. Empowering individuals and organizations is his passion. He wrote a new book called A Life Less Stressed: the 5 pillars of health and wellness and has a weekly podcast called Unstress with Dr. Ron Ehrlich. Dr Ron is also co-founder and board member of Nourishing Australia, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to informing, educating and inspiring people about the critical importance of healthy soils, nutrient-dense foods, and sustainable farming, bringing together principles of holistic healthcare and holistic farm management for the health of people, communities and ultimately, our planet.

    In this episode, we discuss:
The different types of stress are relative; What’s stressful for you is stressful for you. Dr Ron defines stress as anything that compromises the immune system or promotes chronic inflammation. He also reminds us that not all stress is bad. Exercise, for example, is a positive stress on your body. Balancing the good and bad stress is what’s important.
Holistic dentistry: A way to connect dental health to overall health and wellness.
    Postural stress and awareness
The effect of industry on research and public views on health
The five pillars of health from Dr. Ron’s new book: Sleep, Breathe , Nourish, Move, and Think. Cultivating these are the key to building resilience.

Exceptional, Real, and Relatable Podcast!

Been meaning to write this review for a while because I LOVE this podcast so much!! It was such a relief to find it when I did! I was exhausted and confused about why my energy was crashing and why I was struggling to find my way in this career this I had invested so much time, love and money to get into! I could state that I was burnt out, but I didn’t really know what that meant, or how normal it was, or how to deal with it. I had so much guilt around feeling this way! This podcast explains what burn out actually is and gives you evidence-based information and tools to understand why you’re feeling that way and what might need to change (internally and externally) to overcome it and become lit up again! The authors are completely honest and transparent about their own struggles too, and this helps to remind you that you’re not alone. The speakers that they bring on are knowledgeable, compassionate practitioners and educators who provide incredible insight into burn out and strategies to overcome it! I also LOVE that there’s always a little humor in the show! It helps take the edge off of an issue that can feel dark and sad and it brightens my day when I’m experiencing a low moment in my own burn out journey. I’ve been listening for a long time and will continue to listen as long as the show is around!!
