Very un-edited

I agree with much of what she says, but her delivery is scattered and comes across like she has put zero effort into polishing up the presentation. Which feels disrespectful to the listener.

Doesn’t really confront giftedness

Having studied giftedness for a while, I was disappointed by the low emotional effort expended by the host of this podcast. I don’t expect someone to match my knowledge or even my views on giftedness, but I do want them to look at the topic with courage and sincerity.

One of the first things she says in Ep. 1 is that “IQ tests are bullsh**.” That’s a very broad statement to make when one has been identified as gifted, mostly likely by an IQ test, and in Ep. 2 she says that highly intelligent people don’t know what they don’t know.

If Ms. Carlson wants to be taken seriously, she frankly needs to investigate these very IQ tests, and not just from a historical perspective. “Railroad track widths are based on horse sizes, so therefore railroads are bullsh**!” is not a convincing argument to anyone. The psychometric qualities of IQ tests and their predictive power is both broad and robust across studies. Why? She acknowledges in Ep. 1 again that they are better now than they used to be. Why is that? Are they “less bullsh**” than she thought? Why doesn’t she acknowledge what she doesn’t know?

Worst is listening to this and hearing her state that her mother is an expert in gifted education. Why don’t we hear straight away from her mom on this topic, because to work in gifted education for so long and yourself believe that IQ tests are bullsh**, then you must have quite a story to tell. Conversely, if Ms. Carlson’s mom thinks IQ tests are fine, it actually would make for an interesting conversation between two people from opposing points of view.

Listen if you want to hear someone not fully confront their giftedness or to talk about generally about giftedness, but not if you want to be edified and know that you’re further along in your understanding than you were before (or would be if you did your own web search). Three stars for a smart person recording a series of high-vocabulary, well-constructed, mediocrely researched and poorly explored B- audio papers.
