    212. Does Your Niche Have to Match Your Purpose?

    212. Does Your Niche Have to Match Your Purpose?

My guest today is Matt Winters who recently changed his niche away from helping gay men go from feeling stuck and lonely to having the authentic connections they want in all areas of life. Now, Matt plans to leverage a career full of experience toI help leaders relate to people as humans instead of as simply resources.

Matt came to the conversation feeling conflicted and murky.

Was he taking the easy road and neglecting truly meaningful work?
What does it say about him if abandons a community of people he cares about?
And is he even sure that his new niche is a viable one?

So many questions muddied the waters that caused Matt to just feel stuck. The two of us started by just questioning the idea that if you are indeed values driven, every aspect of your work must be filled to the brim with purpose. From there, we just explored Matt’s new niche and addressed each fear he had around it.

Then, we wrapped things up by identifying three clear steps Matt can take to complete some marketing research and start bringing in new clients. Matt showed up with so much authenticity and care throughout the episode. You’ll hear it right away. And as coaches, there’s nothing better than working with an open hearted, truly coachable client, which was 100% Matt. By the end of our conversation, I think we both felt grounded and clear about how purpose and meaning show up everywhere when you are a person who cares about purpose and meaning.

    Key Takeaways:

    Alignment over Palatability
    Refine Your Deep Niche
    Target Ready Clients
    Embrace Fluidity

    210. Should You Offer Coaching Scholarships

    210. Should You Offer Coaching Scholarships

Today we’re going to talk about scholarships. Let's draw a clear distinction between discounts and scholarships. A while back, inside the Hive, we had a member share that someone requested a scholarship into her program. After a little negotiation back and forth, this coach said yes to the client’s scholarship request. But when we really looked at the circumstance, this client didn’t earn a scholarship, they just got a discount, which is not equitable or sustainable. There's nothing wrong with offering discounts, but don’t confuse them with scholarships. A scholarship is something that is awarded on the basis of merit, achievement or other qualification. Scholarships require structure, clear criteria, intention and an equitable process to evaluate the winners. We need be thoughtful about when, why and to whom we decide to grant scholarships.

So that sets the stage for today’s episode. Dani Abernathy is back and this time, she’s ready to begin the process of rolling out an equitable, sustainable scholarship program. Now, I am not a DEIB coach, but I have given a lot of thought to the idea of scholarships and you’ll hear me ask Dani some essential Getting Started questions to help her begin to evaluate the shape of her scholarship program. So, if you have ever made the common mistake of slapping a discount on your offer and calling it a scholarship or maybe you want to develop an aligned scholarship program in your own business, then this episode is for you.

    Key Takeaways

    Alignment with Mission
    Equity over Fairness
    Clear Expectations and Support
    Clarity in Selection
    Financial Aid Approach
    Focus on Impact

    209. Build Your List To Land More Clients

    209. Build Your List To Land More Clients

We are wrapping up our special list building series today. And I know I’ve been talking a lot about how list building provides every coach and course creator with more options. But it’s also the thing that helps you move beyond relying on referrals to bring in private clients.

Which is why today, we’re going to craft a list building strategy with private client attraction in mind. My guest, Michelle Cox, teaches people the learnable skills to embrace their secret dream of writing a book so that they can go from feeling like an imposter with a silly book idea to being an author who did the hard work and wrote a damn good book. Michelle has a very clear vision about where she wants to take her business.

That vision looks like:➡️8-10 private clients➡️1-2 VIP Days each month➡️1 small group and maybe a membership down the road.

This vision is totally possible for Michelle and for you. But only if you make list building your top priority. Why? Because 1-3% of your list will end up becoming customers. So, if you can’t find customers, it’s probably a sign that list building has fallen to the wayside.

Today, Michelle and I craft a simple plan of (boring) habits she can repeat, every week, in order to become more visible and build her list. None of it is complicated or fancy, but it is essential because if Michelle wants to work with 16 clients, she needs a list of 1600 subscribers.

So, as you listen along, think about your client-getting goal. If your list building efforts don’t match that number, then this episode is for you.

    Key Takeaways:

    208. Your Rinse + Repeat List Building Plan

    208. Your Rinse + Repeat List Building Plan

So this is the 4th episode in our special Greatest Hits List Building series. This week and next, we’re going to focus on strategy, so buckle up my friend.

My guest is Amy Goldmacher. Amy helps aspiring nonfiction authors go from book idea, to proposal, to draft to getting to a publishable book. Her clients are often experts who just need help taking all of their expertise and putting it into a book.

Amy has a super fun lead magnet. It’s a bookmark that walks would-be writers through 4-ways to nail down the title of their book. What’s been missing for Amy is a concrete and repeatable strategy to actually get her lead magnet out in the world. Not only to build her list, but test the effectiveness of her lead magnet marketing, opt-in page conversion, and how well the lead magnet leads to paying clients.

So, Amy and I walk through 4 simple and repeatable ways she can start promoting her lead magnet and get more aspiring authors on her list. Get ready to take some notes because I know you can try out at least one of the strategies we discuss in this episode.

    Key Takeaways

Data-Driven Optimization: Tracking key data points is essential for evaluating lead magnet effectiveness
Contextual Clarity: Provide clear context and value proposition on lead magnet landing pages
Consistent List-Building Habits: Implement a repeatable lead magnet promotion plan monthly
Authentic Direct Messaging: Be transparent and concise when reaching out to followers and focus on providing value rather than pushing for a sale
Four-Week Promotion Plan: Implement a structured approach to promote your lead magnet
Segmentation for Effective Communication: Tag subscribers appropriately to segment your email list for future promotions

    Timestamps & Key Topics

[01:50] Introduction and setting the agenda
[03:30] Tracking data points for lead magnet effectiveness
[06:06] Amy describes her audience and services
    [06:48] Overview of Amy's lead magnet concept/span>
[11:05] Review of Amy's landing page
[16:23] Exploration of Amy's current lead magnet marketing efforts
    [19:29] Four-step monthly list-building plan
[20:40] Leveraging social media platforms for lead magnet promotion
[21:44] Using direct messaging for sharing lead magnets
[25:42] Dallas outlines a four-week lead magnet promotion plan
[27:40] Segmenting your email list for different audiences
    [30:40] Reviewing Amy’s action items
[31:32] Dallas and Amy discuss accountability for implementing the strategy and measuring success

List building is a major priority for the majority of Hive members this year, so we’re focusing on building easy habits to build your list without feeling overwhelmed. Great for all levels of coaches

I found Dallas when I was looking for advice for new coaches. There is plenty on the internet about how to scale, but not a lot when you’re just starting out. A business course I had taken before assumed I already had an audience. I was so confused and feeling a bit hopeless. This podcast gave me a lot of confidence. I needed to just start and figure out some things. Then I worked with Dallas in Client Surge. She’s as tough, caring, and honest as she is on the podcast. Whenever I need a pick-me-up an episode of the podcast seems to turn me around. I’ve shared so many episodes with fellow coaches who are just starting out.
