Here's How You Define Common Sense…

It's a question that's difficult to answer, What Is Common Sense?

After I started my podcast using the theme "Common Sense", some people were critical. Some said common sense is code for not doing enough research. Some even accused me of not having common sense.

So I started asking people, what is common sense? The answers were all over the place. There were as many different answers as people I asked. It dawned on me, people really have no idea what common sense is. If you ever watch the news or scroll through social media you probably know what I'm talking about.

In the beginning I defined common sense as the ability to use logic and reason. But that's too vague and I set out to examine what it really means. I decided to publish it in a short book I call, How To Get Common Sense Even If You Don't Know What It Is.

Today I want to share some of the insights from that book.

Kings, Authoritarian Government & What We Can Learn From It Today

Kings, Authoritarian Government & What We Can Learn From It Today

From Common Sense by Thomas Paine, OF MONARCHY AND HEREDITARY SUCCESSION

Men were originally created equal, and that quality could only be destroyed by some subsequent circumstance. That some people are rich and some are poor is explainable even though it follows misery and oppression. Selfish preservation is what keeps a man from being so poor he's destitute, but it's also what makes him fearful of taking the risks needed to be wealthy.

    1. The problem of kings, authoritarian government and what we can learn from that today.

    2. This also includes a fantastic history of government. Understanding this history puts a lot of modern issues into perspective.

    3. All of this also reflects the influence of God and religion on government and politics.

A Message To The American People

A Message To The American People

Thomas Paine begins Common Sense with a letter. It’s a message to the American people. It’s quite possibly one of the most profound letters ever written. How is it relevant today?
Addresses the issue of division.Uses reason to validate the other side.Lays out a simple truth everyone can understand.
Then he makes the basis for his argument, principles. He identifies the importance of those principles. "The matters affecting America are important to all of humanity. Many of these issues have ramifications and rely on principles that affect people around the world."

The future of America is in large part the future of the world. It’s a responsibility we would do well remember.

Common Sense by Thomas Paine In Modern English

Common Sense by Thomas Paine In Modern English

Common Sense by Thomas Paine in a language you can understand. If you've ever tried to read it you know what I'm talking about. It was one of, if not the most influential books in American history. But it was written over 200 years ago and the old English it's written in, is nearly impossible to understand.

You have to read everything five times to make any sense of it and even then, you’re lucky if you understand it. There’re words we don’t use any more. The speaking style is basically backwards how we speak now, and the whole thing, is written in run on sentences. Try reading that. Try reading a book that completely turns up side down the way you would normally speak, with words sprinkled in that you don’t know the meaning of, all written in sentences as long as a paragraph.
