Maternal Mental Health Series: Where is the Gap? with Leah Andreoni, MA, LMFT, PMH-C

Maternal Mental Health Series: Where is the Gap? with Leah Andreoni, MA, LMFT, PMH-C

While we are beginning to see a generational shift, the topic of mental health, specifically in the perinatal period, is traditionally taboo. Perhaps that’s relative to societal norms, access to support, or quite frankly the cultural structures in general. Nonetheless, statistically speaking women have never been more sick, overwhelmed, depleted, or isolated than ever before.

In effort to increase awareness and support for those struggling through the transition to life after birth, we are releasing a special series of stories from fellow mamas about their experience with perinatal anxiety and depression for Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month in May. Before diving into the series next week, Chelsea sits down with therapist and owner of Rising Sun Therapy, Leah Andreoni, MA, LMFT, PMH-C, for what we’d call an “icebreaker” on the topic.

During the episode, Leah and Chelsea address a bias that some may hold regarding mental health and uncover their shared motivation for supporting the perinatal community. Leah shares her foundational pillars for caring for mental health and the day-to-day signs that may easily be overlooked during the acute postpartum period. Whether you are expecting, in the trenches of early postpartum, years into your motherhood journey, or part of one’s support system, please know that resources are available.

In addition to the resources referenced throughout the conversation, the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline provides 24/7, free, confidential support, resources and referrals to any pregnant and postpartum mothers facing mental health challenges and their loved ones. The service is available via phone and text in English or Spanish.

Call or text 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262) to connect with counselors at the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline.

Selfish or Selfless with Janelle Laurito, INHC

Selfish or Selfless with Janelle Laurito, INHC

In today’s episode, Chelsea catches up with 200-RYT yoga instructor, mindfulness teacher, Founder of Live Well with Janelle, and mama of two - Janelle Laurito. If you don’t know Janelle is one of the most approachable, insightful and inspiring women that Chelsea knows. Not only was Janelle a resource for Chelsea through the confusing HR lingo and overwhelm of planning maternity leave but she has been a continued resource as Chelsea navigates and honors her desire of wanting to be both a career woman and present mom. Janelle is truly a walk-of-her talk as a leader of the guidance she provides to women to support their return to their true selves through mindfulness, movement and nourishment. As a self-proclaimed selfish person, Janelle and Chelsea unpack how different her experiences postpartum varied from her first to her second and why she knows the rebirth of her “selfishness is an advantage to her daughters versus the perhaps perceived disservice. She also shares how she creates those micro-moments for herself throughout her full days.

Nourishment After Birth with Sheri Vettel MPH, RD, LDN, INHC

Nourishment After Birth with Sheri Vettel MPH, RD, LDN, INHC

Today Chelsea catches up with Integrative and Functional Registered Dietitian Sheri Vettel, about navigating postpartum nourishment. As fellow IIN graduates, Chelsea and Sheri remind mamas to honor their bio-individuality as they explore Sheri’s staple recommendations for postpartum recovery. She highlights both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda - a practice that she became intuitively drawn to following the birth of one of her sons. The two also reflect on how the nutrients and elements that now “fuel” them as mamas (both on and off the plate) have shifted after birth and Sheri even shares how her nourishment has varied from one birth to another. Fun fact: Sheri is one of the colleagues that Chelsea mentioned in the “How I Prepared for Postpartum” episode.
