Zoë Schiffer is the author of the new book "Extremely Hardcore: Inside Elon Musk's Twitter," which tells the full story of how the richest man in the world took over a major piece of the 21st century "public square." Schiffer does not take a nostalgic view of pre-Musk Twitter, showing that the company was in many ways poorly run and Twitter itself highly dysfunctional. But she shows how Musk's capricious, self-aggrandizing approach to running the platform have altered it. We discuss the role of Twitter in 21st century America, Musk's radicalization into anti-woke politics, and the harms that come from having someone with so much wealth be given so much power to shape our public discussions.

Consistently great

Nathan always asks the question I was thinking of next, and is one of the best interviewers out there. This podcast is essential to understanding the world today.

Socialist who fired staff for organizing

It’s really hard for me to listen to episodes encouraging people to start a union when the editor-in-chief fired five staff members for organizing. Intellectually the content is rich, but “do as I say, not as I do” doesn’t make for the type of podcast I’d ever support financially.

bring back The Absolute [M]oy[n]!

I like this show a lot and listen frequently. But the main thing I wanna say is how much I love the ‘Democratizing SCOTUS’ episode with Sam Moyn. It’s such a great discussion and I listen to it every couple months
