On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves in Galveston Bay, Texas learned they were free. 
In 2021, June 19 became a national holiday, and while Carol Swain says it might be more appropriate for Americans to celebrate the end of slavery on Jan. 1, the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Juneteenth is a wonderful opportunity for Americans to reflect on our nation’s past.  
Swain, an award-winning author, political scientist, and former professor at Princeton and Vanderbilt University, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the history of Juneteenth and how Americans ought to celebrate the day. Swain also discusses her work in the field of education and the hopeful shift happening within U.S. colleges and universities.

A catholic school’s ability to operate in accordance with its faith is in jeopardy. 
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit heard oral arguments in St. Joseph Parish v. Nessel on Tuesday, June 11. The case involves a Catholic school in Michigan that is asking the court to protect its ability to hire staff who align with its faith.
The Michigan Supreme Court reinterpreted a state civil rights statute’s definition of sex in July 2022 to include sexual orientation without any exemption for religious organizations. In March 2023, the Michigan legislature wrote this into state law, expressly prohibiting discrimination on sexual orientation or gender identity. 
The school’s right to hire staff who hold its views on marriage and gender is at risk. St. Joseph's asks all staff to be practicing Catholics and uphold the faith. 
Senior Counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty Will Haun argued the case before the Sixth Circuit Court on June 11. 
He joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what the case means for Christian institutions nationwide.

Every year at this time, when hurricane season rolls around, corporate media start pumping out headlines linking the severity of hurricanes to climate change. But is there causation or correlation? And if changes in the climate do affect hurricanes, is it in the way climate activists claim?
Climatologist David Legates says, "[If] we have colder periods, we will get more hurricane activity. If we have warmer periods, the hurricane activity tends to drop off.”
Legates serves as a visiting fellow for the Science Advisory Committee in the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment at The Heritage Foundation, and is a professor emeritus at the University of Delaware. He is also the co-author of the book “Climate and Energy: The Case for Realism.”
Legates joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what connection does exist between hurricanes and a changing climate.
