The Need For Collaboration | PAWCast 70 | Veterinary Podcast

Access The Video Version: https://bit.ly/3jMaSAE  To engage the processes of accountability, we have to be able to collaborate. The problem with that is that collaboration takes time, coordination, skill and effort, which means sometimes it gets put aside for the sake of something else. In this episode of the PAWCast, Ben and Dr. Riolo sit down to discuss the necessity for collaboration as well as the barriers that hold us back from actively engaging that process. Finding My Why Feat. Rebecca Enerson & Aimee Labrie | PAWCast 68 | Veterinary Podcast

Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/rt2-wVC0_FU Over the last few months, PAW Health has been blessed to have Rebecca Enerson and Aimee Labrie from the MSU Veterinary School here with us on a summer long externship. As third year vet students, it was their mission to "put on the shoes" of emergency veterinary medicine and see if it is actually of interest to them. They've been able to work on their skills and knowledge base as well as make long lasting connections with those who are here and committed to serve the patient. But they also did another, unintended thing. They found their "why." The year 2020 and into 2021 was a dark one for them as vet students. Almost all learning transitioned to being online. Events ceased. Friends and colleagues began to struggle and over time, many felt as though all hope was lost. They began to wonder why they even bothered embarking on this difficult journey in the first place. This is the story of how both Rebecca and Aimee re-found their "why." We hope you enjoy it. The Veterinary Night Life | PAWCast 67 | Veterinary Podcast

Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Q64-hvP1_9w Working the overnights as a veterinarian can be a tall task. You're typically one of very few, if not the only vet on shift within a hundred mile radius. You're only seeing critical and urgent care patients. You have to perform surgeries and attend to hospitalized patients with a high degree of both efficiency and accuracy. And you almost always have to do it while your clients wish they didn't have such a long wait time. In short, the veterinary night lift is not an easy one. It's no wonder that so many veterinary professionals prefer to work during daylight hours. So, for the crazy few that are attracted to the role, what keeps them coming back? Do they see great purpose in what they do or are they just gluttons for punishment. To find out, we have Dr. Rheannon Burris join us to discuss the last year of her time as an overnight veterinarian and how it has taken her from being a baby doctor to a true veterinary professional. This is Dr. Burris' second appearance on the PAWCast. Check out her post-externship PAWCast here: https://youtu.be/hRg4mTUeEi8  Like, Share and Subscribe! It's Not Just Another Job | PAWCast 66 | Veterinary Podcast

Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ZbjW0bKBlVU  We know that there is a significant gap in between the demand for veterinary services and the availability of veterinary services. But, per the AVMA, we have a surplus of doctors in the profession (in small animal clinics), so that means that we have to look further. It has been reported that there are.6 CVTs for every 1 DVM in the profession. CVTs, paired with uncertified medical staff, hereby referred to as MSS (Medical Support Staff) are the hands that every doctor uses to implement patient care. That means diagnostics, treatments, surgeries, vaccines, estimates... Basically everything that happens in a veterinary clinic has to go through the hands of the medical support team before anything happens. That means that when there's a lack of skilled workers to fulfill what is necessary, patient care suffers. So how do we get more people interested and involved in veterinary medicine? We first have to make it more than just another job. Do you think working as a CVT or MSS is a viable long term career option? Let us know in the comments! Like, Share and Subscribe! Inefficient or Short Staffed? Both. | PAWCast 65 | Veterinary Podcast

Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/6I9FZbt7058  The Washington Post recently released an article discussing the seven industries most desperate for workers. You can find that article here: https://wapo.st/2SIfwpE   This led Ben, Dr. Katie and Dr. Caroline into a discussion on whether or not the veterinary industry has problems more sourced in being short staffed or in being inefficient. If you have listened to the PAWCast in the past, you know that we are big believers in care provision models heavily focused on efficiency and availability, but we can also acknowledge that not everyone can perform veterinary medicine the way that we do at PAW Health Network. So, to understand the issue of veterinary staff shortages more effectively, this episode is a deep dive into the reality of staffing, wages, benefits and the impact of COVID-19 on the veterinary community. All the referenced articles and reports are linked below. What's your opinion? Are we actually short staffed or do you think the problems could be solved if we were more efficient in the way care is provided across the board? Let us know in the comments!
