    171. Beyond The Mask of Men: Their Emotional Struggles & Being Misunderstood w/ Jonathan Gustave, LMFT

Over 6 million men suffer from depression per year, their suicide rate is four times higher than women and they're more likely to turn to substance abuse as a coping mechanism for mental health issues.

These statistics raises a question: "Are men misunderstood?"

The notion that men are exempt from pain, emotions, or empathy beyond themselves has shaped a distorted view and narrative about men, resulting in being overlooked and misunderstood.

This misconception extends from their closest relationships to societal and cultural norms, creating a narrative that often fails to recognize the depth of men's emotional lives and experiences.

On this week's podcast join me as I talk with Licensed Family & Marriage Therapist, Jonathan Gustave. Join us as he talks about being abandoned by both his parents, the challenges faced by the men he works with, and the barriers men encounter in expressing their emotions post-divorce.

SO MUCH TO SAY!!!

Where do I began, back in 2022, I was going through a NASTY separation. I honestly didn’t know where to turn to for grievance or to release the emotions of my situation. I turned to prayer, positive affirmations, podcasts, you name it. But as I was searching different podcast shows for “breakups,” I came across “Purposely Thriving!” And when I tell you from the first episode, it changed my ENTIRE perspective of my situation. I remember driving 4 hours out of state just listening to episodes, finding relief. I honestly felt so good to the point that I even ordered her book online. Divorce Your Story! I studied the book and registered for one of her classes. Tonya has taken the time out her busy schedule to coach and guide me in right direction. I’m SO GRATEFUL to have met her and to hear her story! I look forward to sharing my journey with each of you soon!

Reclaiming My Voice - 5 star

On the "Purposely Thriving" podcast, Tonya creates a truly safe and supportive space for survivor’s stories

As a guest, I was able to open up about my personal experience like never before. The thoughtful questioning allowed me to explain my journey in a natural, unrushed way while feeling completely comfortable. This was the first time I've been able to share my truth so openly, without any shame or guilt attached.

The host has a gift for putting guests at ease and facilitating honest, healing conversations. It was my first podcast experience, but it flowed so organically that I left feeling empowered to keep reclaiming my voice, one step at a time.

"Purposely Thriving" is providing an invaluable platform for survivors to speak up and inspiring others rebuilding their lives after abuse. The work this podcast is doing to raise awareness and facilitate healing is making a real impact. I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to be heard and to be encouraged to continue sharing my story through more podcasts.

For anyone seeking a compassionate space to share their experience, or to learn from powerful survivor stories, I can't recommend "Purposely Thriving" enough. It's a beacon of hope and light in helping women heal while rebuilding their lives and families!

God bless!
