Empowering Diverse Businesses in California's Clean Energy Future

In this episode, we are joined by Noemi Gallardo, the first Latina Commissioner on the California Energy Commission (CEC), appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom in February 2023. Gallardo brings a wealth of experience, having worked with SunRun Inc. and The Greenlining Institute, and currently serves as the lead commissioner for the Clean Energy Hall of Fame Awards—an annual event that honors outstanding achievements in advancing California’s clean energy goals. Gallardo shares insights into how the CEC is ensuring that small and minority-owned businesses have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from the state’s ambitious clean energy goals, including reaching 100% clean energy by 2045. Through initiatives such as the Justice, Access, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JAEDI) program, the CEC is actively creating pathways for diverse businesses to engage in this transformative industry. We also explore how state legislation and programs, such as supplier diversity and workforce development initiatives, are opening new doors for contractors, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses. California’s Clean Energy Blueprint for Equity and Innovation

In this episode, California’s Clean Energy Blueprint for Equity and Innovation, we are joined by California State Assemblymember Cottie Petrie-Norris, Chair of the Assembly's Committee on Utilities and Energy. California has ambitious goals: lowering emissions by 40% from 1990 levels by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2045. As we transition to a low-carbon future, the urgency of the climate crisis requires balancing sustainability, reliability, and affordability. Assemblymember Petrie-Norris shares her four key priorities in her role, which include affordability, ensuring reliability, leveraging federal funds, and accelerating the pace of clean energy transition. We discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead, especially for small and minority-owned businesses, and how they can align with the state’s energy goals. With utilities setting procurement targets—spending over $14 billion with small and minority-owned businesses in 2022—this transition is not only crucial but a significant opportunity for economic growth and innovation. Tune in to hear how California is positioning itself as a leader in clean energy, and how small businesses can be a part of this transformative journey.
