Ep 75 From brain injury to running across Canada – Troy Adams liberates himself and others from the myths that hold society back.

Eat Real To Heal Podcast

Troy Adams is a 33 years old married father of two. His family is fed by plants, positivity and balance. Troy is also an avid adventure ultra runner who doubles as a Journeyman Insulator by career. He enjoy the challenges ahead in life and believes when in doubt choose peace, add some plants, and life will be enjoyable beyond measure. Troy may appear to be an everyday guy living a fairly normal life, but what you don’t see is that at age 16, Troy suffered a severe brain injury which has forever affected his entire life. But he’s used this experience to fuel himself to be of service to other in ways beyond measure.

On this episode of the Eat Rea to Heal podcast, Troy shares his story of how he dealt with and often ignored his brain injuries in the beginning. It wasn’t always apparent, especially to his teenage friends, just how badly Troy was suffering. Information surrounding brain injuries wasn’t widely evident when Troy first had is accident and even his doctors didn’t know how to assess the effects of his brain injury. Without knowing how to deal with his trauma head-on, Troy tried to prove that everything was ok and that he was ‘normal’ like all of his friends. Instead, Troy found that his new normal was very disruptive - costing him friends, his schooling, jobs and later battles with medication overdoses – a similar story that many people with brain injuries often experience.

Then Troy found running. Thanks to wanting to lose some weight and get in shape, he joined the annual Terry Fox run and that’s when running became Troy’s medication, therapy and a chance at a healthier life. Running liberated Troy from his brain injury and for the first time, he felt like the old Troy – just better and stronger. And that’s when he realized that he needed to advocate for people with brain injuries and Troy’s Run Foundation was born. Listen now to learn the story of Troy’s ran across Canada to bring people with brain injuries together and how a plant-based diet fuelled his mind, body and his journey.
