a podcast about cinema, taking on a new double feature every week to showcase the high and low brow of the motion pictures.
4.4 - Greed / Jauja (w/ Ryan Swen)
00:00 - 45:44 - Greed
45:44 - 1:03:35 - Malcolm in the Middle
1:03:35 - 1:33:58 - Jauja
And we're back, for leg two of the Extended Clip Reunion Tour, with returning champion Ryan Swen ( @swen_ryan )
In Timeline A, it is 1924, and greed is good. that's right, we're talking about Erich von Stroheim's Greed. The big questions of life; money, p*ssy, film preservation, etc. Then, we hop back in the bus for everybody's favorite segment, Malcolm in the Middle (45:44) to talk about Toni Erdmann, The Assassin, Crazy World, and Seven Chances. In Timeline B, it is 2014, but the power of cinema takes us back a bit further than that for Lisandro Alonso's Jauja (1:03:35).
see you next time, for The Passion of Joan of Arc and The Master.
TÁR (w/ Ryan Swen)
TÁR (Todd Field, 2022)
The second leg of the reunion tour kicks off next week, but in the meantime we decided to stroll over to the multiplex and see... an art film?
TÁR is the talk of the town, so we talked it out with our good friend Ryan Swen. we get into Field's boastful direction, Blanchette's powerhouse performance, going viral, grad school ethics, trouble with classicists, and more.
4.3 - Dr. Mabuse the Gambler / Dragged Across Concrete
00:00 - 32:44 - Dr. Mabuse the Gambler
32:44 - 54:45 - Malcolm in the Middle
54:45 - 1:40:45 - Dragged Across Concrete
1:40:45 - 2:01:50 - e-mails, montage
Leg one of the reunion tour comes to a close with this episode, yet another two-hour pod packed with heat and punching above its weight class. in Timeline A, it is 1922. Fritz Lang guides us through the criminal underworld via his ultimate supervillain character; a pulp mythology character we've already discussed twice. the film is Dr. Mabuse the Gambler. then, on Malcolm in the Middle (32:44), we catch up on our gap years with The Goat, Safety Last!, Song to Song, and Godard Mon Amour. in Timeline B, it is 2019. S. Craig Zahler takes the scenic route through Trump era middle America, applying his novelistic approach to a contemporary, "political" cops-and-robbers crime thriller. we have a lot to say about Dragged Across Concrete (54:45). after that (1:40:45), we get to some e-mails and leave you behind for a couple of weeks with a special holiday-themed montage. happy halloween you freaks, see you on leg two of the tour (coming soon!)
4.2 - Within Our Gates / City Hall (w/ Shawn Glinis)
00:00 - 6:20 - Intro
06:20 - 34:14 - Within Our Gates
34:14 - 55:23 - Malcolm in the Middle
55:23 - 1:49:00 - City Hall
1:49:00 - 2:00:59 - E-mail / Montage
The reunion tour has now started proper with our first double feature. In timeline A, we discuss the landmark film from 1920 by Oscar Micheaux, Within Our Gates (06:20). we get into anachronistic scoring of silent films, writing history in lightning, and more. on a hefty edition of Malcolm in the Middle (34:14), we catch up on our pre-1920 cinema with Feuillade's Les Vampires, Griffith's A Corner in Wheat, the short films of F. Percy Smith, and Chaplin's The Immigrant. in timeline B, we discuss Frederick Wiseman's City Hall (55:23), an epic 4.5 hour portrait of how beantown operates from 2020. Shawn is the expert here so we differ to his judgement. "oh yeah, Boston".
See you next time as we wrap up leg 1 of the tour with Dr. Mabuse the Gambler & Dragged Across Concrete.
4.1 - We're Back / John DeMarsico
00:00 - 12:00 - Getting the Gang Back Together
12:00 - 31:42 - John DeMarsico Interview
31:42 - 1:40:25 - Malcolm’s AMC A-List Hour
We’re doing the podcast again.
After us rowdy boys make amends and get back together, we set out a plan for the most epic reunion tour possible. Then, the SNY Broadcast Director for the New York Mets, responsible for so many amazing moments in live baseball this season, joins Eddie for a chat (12m). Finally, we return to Malcolm’s AMC A-List Minute (31m). Unfortunately, we haven’t done this segment since last time we had a podcast together, so we spent an entire hour catching up on every new release that the three of us have watched during our brief retirement. Movies discussed include RRR, Ambulance, Apollo 10.5 A Space Age Childhood, Father Stu, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Northman, Marry Me, Benedetta, Zeroes and Ones, Crimes of the Future, Hustle, Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick, Both Sides of the Blade, Barbarian, Vikram, Actors, Nope, The Velvet Underground, Memoria, Memory, France, The Worst Person in the World, The Batman, Matrix Resurrections, Red Rocket, Deep Water, X, and more.
See you next time for the first double feature of the tour: Within Our Gates / City Hall, with Shawn Glinis.
