I met Murdock Martin in September 2022 as I rolled along the stunning Big Sur coast in California. Murdock is a host on Warm Showers in one of the most remote sections of the Pacific Coast route - nestled just off the shoreline next to his office, a United States Forest Service fire station. Murdock has worked in wildland firefighting for nearly 30 years and has called Big Sur home for over a decade. Since moving there, he’s opened his beautiful home to over 250 cyclists traveling along the Pacific Coast, just like I was last year. Not only is Murdock incredibly generous and a great guy to chat with, he is a big 49ers fan with memorabilia throughout his home - no warmer welcome than that! A friend told me about Mike “Cycling Mikey” van Erp while I was participating in a bike race in Idaho back in September. Mike was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in the Netherlands. He has spent well over a decade helping make the roads of London safer. How does he do it? He simply records infractions from his bicycle on his commute to work and sends the files to the police. He has amassed a following of over 100,000 people on YouTube through his advocacy for safer roads. Due to the nature of his content and busting people who are breaking the law, he’s received criticism but largely he has the support of the general public for helping make roads safer and encouraging drivers to focus on the road ahead. Bonus episode with Eric Lederer (deleted Instagram!). I met Eric this summer halfway through RAGBRAI in central Iowa. Our mutual friend, Quinn, connected us and it turns out we have a shockingly similar and parallel story when it comes to bikes. Eric was in the final third of a 7,000 mile bike ride around the United States when we met in Iowa. His mission? To support athletes with disabilities and raise $50k for Achilles International.
