How should Catholic parents handle their children coming out?

How should Catholic parents handle their children coming out?

I have had a lot of conversations with Catholic parents who do not know what to do when their children come out to them. Having LBGTQ+ children is not something talked about much in Catholic circles. For awhile, I would sit in groups of Catholics who talked about gay people in the worst ways and I would keep my mouth shut knowing that I had a gay child. Then my oldest son died to suicide and I decided that I was not going to choose my Faith or my child. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says nothing about having to make that choice. I believe all the teachings of the Catholic Church and live by them, but I cannot make that choice for anyone else. Even my children. Anthony died as a self identified atheist with two children out of wedlock. If I trust God with Anthony's soul even knowing all the choices that he made outside of Church teaching then I have to do that with my surviving children.

My only job is to be their mother. To guide them and love them but also to accept that they have the right to their own way in life, which will come with mistakes, sins, heartbreaks, joys and moments to celebrate.

In this episode, I talk to Shannon Ochoa of Eden Invitation which is a group that helps young adults who identify as LGBTQ+ and Catholic find community and support. I hope you enjoy it.

Lawyer Amber Webber Booker talks about activism, racism and being a Black woman in court

Lawyer Amber Webber Booker talks about activism, racism and being a Black woman in court

This week I have on Amber Webber Booker. I followed her on Instagram this summer and have enjoyed every minute of it. She is hilarious and also gives space for me to ask questions and I appreciate that. That is how I learn. But more than that, I love finding people who are easy to talk to about all the things from hip hop to legal jargon. Amber is that.

I hope you enjoy this conversation.

Leticia and Laura: A Conversation with two Moms who survived the worst day of their life

Leticia and Laura: A Conversation with two Moms who survived the worst day of their life

Today's guest is Laura Kelly Fanucci who lost twin baby girls days after their birth. I reached out to Laura and asked her if she would come on and talk to me about grief, loss and life after seeing the story of Chrissy Teigen and John Legend losing their son Jack recently. Rarely do you hear two mothers who have lost children have a conversation. Most of the time it is a mother who has survived loss talking to someone who has not. So I felt there was space for us to have this conversation right now in this time with so much loss all around us. I hope it helps anyone who is finding themselves in the dark waves of grief and loss.

Author of Everyday Sacrament & Grieving Together.

Listen to Leticia!

I have been following Leticia for five or six years. She continues to inspire and challenge me in different ways and I couldn’t recommend listening to and reading her work more. She is an authentic, honest voice to follow in 2020. Thank you, Leticia, for continuing to invite us in to your life. I am so grateful!

Honest, Intelligent , and Truth Seeking

Great podcast, please continue to put out superb content. Yours is, I believe, a true voice of Catholicism, one that is pro-life AND anti-racism. Life AND love for all, not just for people of privilege, from conception to death. Your testimony and faith even through unbearable trials and tragedy are a source of strength to people who are carrying heavy crosses.
