The Flare Up Show Chrissy Cordingley

At an early age, Ellen Busch was diagnosed as dyslexic and as a result, was given an academic death sentence; in a split second her self-esteem was destroyed, and her potential evaporated. Despite her challenges, or in spite of them, Ellen’s parents fostered her education outside the classroom, by teaching her how to pilot her father’s boat and how to navigate, understand, and respect the ocean. They enabled Ellen to participate in team sports,  to go on a two-week Outward Bound program, and made it possible for her to get certified in scuba diving at the age of 17. As a young adult, becoming an expert skier and ski instructor, Ellen fell in love with adventure and the challenges it brought. Mastering these skills enabled Ellen to persevere and empowered her to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, all with dyslexia.

Despite her accomplishments, Ellen still suffered from low self-esteem, and was consistently underemployed, as well as a regular target of bullies and predators. After escaping an abusive marriage, Ellen faced her trauma and the belief systems that had been holding her back. Even with the sudden loss of her parents, who were relentless in their support for Ellen, she learned to heal and ask for help. It has been through her work with coaches, therapists, and training with Navy SEALS that Ellen has learned to take back her power, to live confidently, and to thrive as she follows her dreams.  

Ellen's first book, (dis)Empowered, which chronicles her survival story of academic and domestic abuse, was to published in May 2023  and the audio book is in production. She currently resides in Colorado where she can follow her passions down the ski slopes, and the world beyond.

One of my favourite topics to talk about is grief. Why? Because for me it's one of the hardest and most uncomfortable emotions to sit with and yet it's something all of us have experienced or will experience several times within our lives.

But it doesn't have to be scary, especially with people like Christine Davies here on this planet with us.

The Rev. Christine Vaughan Davies runs the hospital chaplaincy department at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. She is an ordained Presbyterian Minister, a Certified Educator with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, a Seminary Professor, and a trained Spiritual Director. She earned her Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers University.

As a writer and speaker, Christine shares stories from her chaplaincy work with the hope that it helps normalize grief and allow people to live more fully in the moment. She educates about grief, loss and the importance of advance care planning. Christine helps become more effective listeners and caregivers. She guides individuals on how to care for themselves more wholeheartedly and be in touch with their spiritual and emotional selves. Christine often shares different spiritual practices and how to incorporate the sacred into everyday life.

She lives with her family on a small farm in New Jersey and spends her time chasing chickens and chauffeuring her school-aged children to all their activities.

Robyn is an inclusion consultant for companies with increasingly diverse workforces. Much of her life and professional experience has been in various international and cross-cultural settings, where diversity, equity, and inclusion were important in her work. One example, and a life-changing highlight, was living and working in Nairobi, Kenya, for seven years.  When not helping companies become more inclusive, Robyn enjoys drinking coffee in her sunroom as many mornings as she can, eating Indian takeout with fresh naan, and travels whenever possible.
