A Show About Animals

Many of us dream about talking to other animals - but what if we already can? A deep dive into Koko the Gorilla, one of the most hotly contested stories in American science - and what it all says about us humans. From VICE World News.
Loved it

Fascinating, informative, great reporting and storytelling, and well-paced, angering at times (humans are very selfish). Loved the host. Binged all episodes in one sitting. One of the best podcasts I’ve listened to in awhile. I hope there’ll be more seasons with different subjects or even follow-ups.
Well-researched and paced

I was really pleased to find this podcast. The pacing and research was great. The focus on not only Koko but also Nim was wonderful. Recommend!

Heard about this podcast in “Weirdest Thing I Learned Today” and binged it. Wow. Thanks for the extensive work you did to give a glimpse into Koko, gorillas, research, etc. so heartbreaking that we always see the need to humanize instead of appreciate species for who/what they are. Very informative!
KoKo the gorilla series

Very fascinating, interesting and informative. Provides research through interviewing main characters to understand language capabilities of Gorillaz! Very entertaining as much as watching a top rated Hollywood movie.Blends heartwarming and humorous stories about the peculiar and loving nature of Koko. Wow this series is dynamite!
Conclusion of Season 1 is a bit wobbly…
12/22/2021
The conclusion that the series makes, that we may never understand the “language” of another species, is kind of unscientific. It seems to me that the role of science is to make clearer what previously had mystified us. A better take on this series might be that psychologists in this field are just lousy at setting up and conducting these kinds of experiments - for ethical and many other reasons.
Fascinating

I didn’t anticipate this being as interesting as it was! I’ve listened to all of the episodes today, back to back. Highly recommend!
Top tier journalism

I was at Stanford in the mid ‘70s, and knew a couple of people who worked with Penny Patterson and Koko. The enthusiasm and naive science of all the ape language projects of that era is captured pretty well. Years later, I was struck by how only one person in the myriad of researchers involved was a native “speaker” of American Sign Language, and how there were seemingly no experts in human language acquisition involved at all, to provide any semblance of a control group. Adult memories of how we all acquired language feel so effortless, despite kids working at it day and night for years, that it’s still pretty much a mysterious miracle that it happens. The production quality of later episodes seems to be deteriorating a bit, with occasional pauses of “dead air” between clips of different interviews. Hope this is just a temporary lapse.
For animal behaviorists

I am fascinated by the behavior of both wild and domesticated animals, and as an animal lover this series is right up my alley.
