What I’ve Learned from Being a Widower

What I’ve Learned from Being a Widower

Nine years ago, Daniel Brooker lost the only woman he’d ever loved, his wife Lyndsie, to ovarian cancer. As he struggled to stay strong in his faith and communicate what he was feeling to others, he discovered that while there are many support groups and resources for widows, there were glaringly few for widowers. The experience prompted him to found Refuge, a ministry for men dealing with the loss of a beloved spouse. This week Daniel talks with Redeemed founder Paul Amos about his journey and everything he’s learned from it, one of the most important being how to (and how not to) communicate with someone who’s suffered a monumental loss: “Don’t tell someone it’s going to be OK—stay with them until they can say it themselves.”

    Purpose, Leadership, and Unity

    Purpose, Leadership, and Unity

Lawrence Scott was raised by a long line of ministers, played football at the U.S. Military Academy, served in the Army, and worked as a pastor himself, so it’s safe to say he’s acquired a lot of knowledge about leadership from a wide variety of sources. Nate Dewberry talks with Lawrence about what he’s learned in this week’s Redeemed Man podcast, from the need for humility to finding your life purpose even when life doesn’t pan out exactly as you’d planned. They also talk about “LoSco Speaks,” the purpose-based leadership program he launched in 2020, and how American Christians can unify the church—and society—by focusing less on finding fault in one another and more on following the example of Jesus.

    Purpose-Based Identity > Performance-Based Identity

Luke Parker is a college athlete, a reality show contestant, and a modern man who, like many of us, has faced difficulties and temptations in life. However, he has found the security of God's love and the knowledge that he is not alone in his struggles to be a source of strength. Luke, a competitive CrossFit athlete, describes himself and others as "fellow beggars" searching for bread. In this week's episode, Luke talks to Nate about his challenges, some of which he acknowledges were self-inflicted. He also shares how honest and open relationships with God and other men have helped him stay on a positive path.

    Will You Finish Strong?

    Will You Finish Strong?

As a former lieutenant in the Army’s Delta Force antiterrorism unit, Jeff Tiegs has seen combat and strife as far away as Panama, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Now retired from the military, he is putting his strategic and intelligence-gathering skills to use on behalf of exploited women all over the world as the president of Skull Games, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting sexual predators and human trafficking. In this week’s podcast with Nate Dewberry, Jeff talks about the work his team does and the ways in which sex traffickers exploit human nature and create a false sense of security to keep women under their control. He also talks about his new book, Where Have All the Heroes Gone?, and its lessons for older men and younger generations alike as they try to break free from complacency and find a way to “finish strong” in life.

    Talking with God on Aconcagua

    Talking with God on Aconcagua

Sean Knox, the co-owner and president of Columbus-based Knox Pest Control, has long had a passion for mountain climbing—one that recently took him to the peak of Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere. For him, though, the climb was about more than just thrills and the once-in-a-lifetime view from 22,838 feet up; Sean found that the natural wonder of the mountain brought him closer to God and enriched his prayer life like never before. Sean talks with Nate Dewberry this week about the trip up the mountain as well as more down-to-earth topics, including keeping passions from turning into obsessions and countering the self-doubt that eats away at all of us.
