Savvy, practical insights on where our Education Establishment went wrong and how most schools can be improved.LET'S FIX EDUCATION explains the many dysfunctional theories and methods operating within our schools. This podcast is intended for parents, teachers, and community leaders who want education reform.
Each week, LET'S FIX EDUCATION examines another problem in our public schools, such as: Constructivism. Learning styles. Sight-words. No memorization. Cooperative learning. Prior knowledge. Reform math. The dilution of knowledge. Common Core. Project-based learning. Student-centered, etc. In fact, there are DOZENS of counterproductive learning and teaching theories, all made worse by ideological motives.
Bio: Bruce Deitrick Price is a novelist, artist, and education reformer. He has analyzed the problems in education for more than 30 years. Price is the author of "Saving K-12: What happened to our public schools? How do we fix them?" (190 pages) His main education site is Improve-Education.org. Episode 148: Latin Lives On… and On
Wednesday, May 1, 2024
------------
Latin Lives On: 333 common words letter for letter identical in Latin and English. Each word is a mnemonic device providing extra texture, extra connections.
My list illustrates a general principle: there's always a better, quicker, cheaper way to teach a lot. The Education Establishment should focus on this. Instead of retreating from knowledge, the professors should embrace knowledge with greater cleverness.

First published as “42: Who Ruined Reading” on Improve-Education.org. Site is now unavailable due to incompetence of hosting company. I’m working on recovery.
Our Education Establishment is also incompetent. We have 50 million functional illiterates. Please stop putting up with this. Take a little time to understand the Great Reading Heist. Read “the Meaning of the Lucy Calkins fiasco.”

Non-phonics instruction leads to poor reading, anxiety, ADHD, reliance on Ritalin, etc. There is no good reason for teaching with sight-words, except that “experts” insist.
Phonics expert say children typically learn to read in first grade. Requiring children to learn sight-words is typically asking the impossible.
Few humans can memorize even 100 license plates. Why would anyone think that ordinary children can memorize thousands of sight-words?

K-12 Boycott: Are You Ready? (Wednesday, April 17, 2024)
K-12 is too often a bad marriage. The Education Establishment is the alcoholic husband (photo) who beats his long-suffering wife.
All the progressive/socialist/communist schemes are dedicated to the idea of using schools to indoctrinate young minds. Real education is about freeing minds. Take that, John Dewey.
(For ideas, search “homeschool options.” You'll be amazed at the range of possibilities.)
(((Alex Newman in Newsweek: "While Americans once argued about how best to fix the system, today's discussions—especially among conservatives and Christians—often revolve around finding the fastest way to get children out. Almost two-thirds of Americans are dissatisfied with the quality of public education. Even liberals are rapidly losing trust in the schools.")))

Episode 145: Survey Courses? Yes, We Desperately Need Them. (Wed. April 10, 2024)
Our schools have often given up the very idea of teaching lots of stuff, and even if they try, they have no idea how to do it. Train the teachers better and then let them loose.
Survey courses can be a great help, but skip the politicking. Left-wing professors think the whole point of education is to indoctrinate kids. What a selfish idea.

144: Best Practice: Teach Items In Clusters (Wed., April 3, 2024)
Episode 144: Best Practice: Teach Items In Clusters (Wed., April 3, 2024)
If we want to save the schools, we have to teach more information, more quickly.
We have to find techniques that will make it easy for students to remember stuff.
One of the easiest and most essential methods is using clusters, that is several things united by their similarities.

Episode 143: 70 Years Ago, Schools Were Already Sabotaged (Wed., March 27, 2024)
70 Years Ago, Schools Were Already Warped (Wed., March 27, 2024)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joan Dunn, a schoolteacher, wrote a book about her experiences in Brooklyn schools circa 1953. It is a time capsule, showing that quite long ago the professors of education had substantially wrecked everything they touched.
I love this book. It’s a grand statement by a very smart sensitive person. Joan Dunn’s description of public schools appeared 70 years ago but already the public schools were a disaster, a crime scene, an intellectual slum.
(Book's full title is Retreat From Learning: Why Teachers Can't Teach. Not easy to find so I'm happy to tell you that it's on Archive.org )
