Find Yourself a Podcast... Episode #2: Building Bridges
I just finished listening to the second episode of this podcast.
What a timely topic, tolerance. We don't hear a lot about tolerance anymore, or empathy, or understanding. We seem to be in a time where mindless bullying has become the unspoken, but accepted norm, and in some political arenas, glorified as a sign of strength.
But behind the guest's classroom recommendations is a confidence in tolerance that that is profound, important, and undervalued. When we wonder how we can affect change, faced with political choices are all ethically challenged, we look to early education, not as indoctrination, not with any political agenda, but simply recognizing our differences, understanding and accepting them, as perhaps, only children can.
It has increasingly become an acceptable alternative to build walls as barriers, propose deportation of those "different" as a means of protection, as if it is a solution to the radicalization of minorities, when actually it is causation. What I so enjoyed about this discussion was the underlying courage and confidence that their guest had in her own, and in her students' faith, so much so that she was willing and open to have her students openly discuss and understand their differences.
What better place to begin than in early education, before the preconceptions can be learned, and what better way to prevent the alienation that leads to the radicalization that so many fear, than to understand our differences ? What a message.
One of the questions that I believe one of the moderators posed was something like, "What do you do if you do not have a Muslim community to share experiences with?" The guest replied, something like, "Well, perhaps you can find a Christian, or some other group that you can get to know." To me, that was the most important point. In this country, and perhaps in this world, so many different people and cultures have been brought so closely together, that we better learn the lessons of our children rather than the fear and prejudice of our own past.
I so much enjoyed this podcast and am glad I found it.
