5-Minute Focus: Your Right Tribe...Will Bring You More Than Oreos and Jack Daniels

5-Minute Focus: Your Right Tribe...Will Bring You More Than Oreos and Jack Daniels

A few years ago I decided to try my hand at dating. It’d been a few years since my husband had passed and I figured I’d give online dating a try. (I may do a whole separate podcast about online dating—that is definitely not for the feint of heart!)

Anyway, I had gone out with a guy, we’d hit it off great and dated for about a month. Things were going great, or so I thought. But then one morning I woke up to what was basically a “Dear Jane” email. An email breaking it off. Not even a phone call, just a cold, impersonal email.

Anyway, I got into a funk, I wondered what I’d done wrong. To this day I still don’t know what happened, but my self-esteem was shattered. I called one of my neighbor ladies, explained what had happened and said I was feeling very down and dejected.

Within 15 minutes there was a knock at my door and there stood four of my dear neighbor ladies--my tribe. It was as if they’d put out an emergency alert, gathered some supplies and headed over to my house. As they came in, I could see they had brought a good assortment of comfort items: Wine and cheese, Oreo cookies, chocolates from Japan, some BBQ chips, popcorn, and a bottle of Jack Daniels....
Listen in as I explain how my tribe held me up and held me together. And what you can do if you don't have a tribe yet.
    I'm cheering for you!

    5-Minute Focus: That's a Good Shot!

    5-Minute Focus: That's a Good Shot!

I’ve talked about perspective before and I want to tell you another story about the power of perspective.

I played some tournament golf in Florida a couple of months ago. My cart partner was a lady named Robyn. Robyn could hit the ball a mile. Sometimes it would go straight down the middle of the fairway, and sometimes it would land in the rough, behind a tree, or in bunker. But no matter where her ball would land, Robyn would always say, “That’s a good shot.”

And then she would step up, take her next shot, and oftentimes she’d land it on the green close to the pin!
Listen in as I talk about Robyn's amazing perspective and also learn about another shift in perspective. Take these two tips and put them into practice in your daily routine--and see how well you score!
    I'm cheering for you!

5-Minute Focus: Say Yes and Go Live Your Life

5-Minute Focus: Say Yes and Go Live Your Life

When I first started coaching many years ago, I worked with a lot of time and energy deprived people. They’d say, Kathy, how do I find more time in the day? How do I find more energy? The best thing I and many other coaches advised was for these very busy people to learn how to say no. Say no to the good so they could say yes to the great things they really wanted to do. No became the default response for getting through the day. Yet some people still found it hard to say no.

Nowadays, however, I find myself coaching people to say yes--with a difference. Don’t say yes just to appease someone else. Say yes to the things that light up your life. Say yes to the opportunities that make you smile. Say yes to the people who bring you joy. Say yes to letting love in. When you say yes to the things that you value and put a priority on, you can more easily figure out what you need to say no to.
Listen in as I talk about saying yes and how I got some sage advice from a shuttle bus driver in Florida.

5 Minute Focus: I Was Looking For Sympathy....Instead I Got Challenged

5 Minute Focus: I Was Looking For Sympathy....Instead I Got Challenged

I was complaining to a golf coach about how hard a particular course was. In fact, I would be happy to never play it again. There were trees that got in the way, water that took my ball, tight fairways, and sand traps that were just no fun at all.

I suppose I was looking to get some sympathy from him. Instead, he responded by saying, "That's a great course, I love it! It's one of my top 3! You have to go back and play it again. I looked at him as if he was crazy….
Tune in to hear how I didn't get any sympathy but instead got a challenge. And learn how you can learn to look at things from a different perspective.

5-Minute Focus: Bright Spots and A Pickup Line

5-Minute Focus: Bright Spots and A Pickup Line

The other morning I had the best attempted pickup encounter. I was outside the Apple Store at the mall waiting for my appointment and doing some people watching. A handsome, tall, older gentleman walks up to me and says "Would you mind doing a YouTube video with me? I need proof I have a girlfriend." He points at an overhead security camera. Grins and gives me a big hug. I just went with it. Then he walked off, turned and smiled again, then disappeared into the crowd. He was delightful and no he didn’t pilfer my wallet…
As I was sitting there thinking that this was the best pickup line I'd ever heard, I realized what a bright spot this was.
I needed that hug probably more than he did. Gotta live the timing of the Universe...
Tune in to today's 5-Minute Focus episode and learn about the power of Bright Spots--how to notice them, how to create them, and how to enjoy them.

    5-Minute Focus: Sharpen Your Focus

    5-Minute Focus: Sharpen Your Focus

If you're trying to reach a new level in business or your personal life, you have to get clear on what you really want.

I was telling my golf coach that I wanted to work on my swing speed. When he asked why, I said because I wanted to be able to get the ball farther down the fairway. He again asked, "Why?" I said because it'll help me get in a better position to get on the green in less strokes. He then went on to ask me about different aspects of my game to include using my fairway woods, chipping, putting, etc. He helped me realize that those were areas that I could improve on, too. He pointed out that being fast but unfocused wasn't the best way to get where I wanted to be. Then he asked,
    "So what's your real goal?"
Listen in to quick podcast about getting real and getting focused. And why being fast and unfocused isn't going to get you to your goal.
