We interact with book publicists pretty often, but a few months ago, one of them, Sami Lien, emailed and asked for recommendations about things to do in Kentucky around Derby. She explained that she is in a travel book club; they read books over the course of 12 months about a particular US location and then take a trip to visit. The novel Horse by Geraldine Brooks was the book that inspired this particular trip for their club.

Well, we love books and travel so we had to invite Sami and her book club friend, Marilyn, to be guests on the show. We had a great time learning about the ins and outs of their travel book club and are excited to get to meet them this Friday at a restaurant about an hour outside of Louisville.

Jud Hendrix has worked at the intersection of personal development and social transformation for over 30 years. He is a teacher, social innovator, community organizer, and movement builder. He helped to envision and launch the Kentucky Interfaith Network with the Center for Interfaith Relations, he co-hosts the Louisville’s Alliance for Sustainable Gun Violence Reduction, he co-founded the Big Table: The World’s Largest Potluck, and created and hosts Walk A Mile In My Shoes: Migration Simulation. For the last 10 years he has been an adjunct professor at Bellarmine University, teaching courses on personal development and social change. He has a degree in Psychology, a Master of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, and is currently finishing his PhD in Education and Social Change researching the power of collaborative networks for large systems change. Last year he and his colleagues completed three different Ecosystemic Social Network Analyses, which he will be sharing the results of with us today.

On April 24, 2024, the Louisville League of Women Voters hosted a Kentucky House District 41 Candidate Forum, featuring candidates Mary Lou Marzian and Rick Adams (both Democrats) at the Bon Air Library. They each answered questions posed by two moderators, Joe Sonka, a reporter with Kentucky Public Radio and Mark Vanderhoff, reporter for WLKY TV News.

This is your chance to learn 50 things in 5 hours! This free, interactive learning extravaganza features more than 50 “how-to” sessions taught by local experts. Learn how to keep bees and raise livestock in the city, grow bananas and mushrooms, make a candle, maintain your bike, harvest rain water, convert your lawn into a “Yarden”, and so much more. Sessions include lessons in home improvement, gardening, crafts, dance, music, business, art, and more! Plus – goats, chickens, rabbits and a miniature horse will be featured in our three garden tents thanks to the Urban Ag Coalition. And Forward Radio will be live broadcasting the entire event and hosting a booth near the north entrance, where you can learn how to broadcast and podcast with community radio!
