Restoration, Self-Care & Gratitude - chatting with Kara Ryska

Restoration, Self-Care & Gratitude - chatting with Kara Ryska

I love Kara’s energy. In her own podcast, she locks arms with other special needs moms, sharing her own story of raising a child with multiple brain tumors. Kara is raw and vulnerable about her journey and I loved chatting with her in this week’s episode of Fuel Your Purpose. We talk about redefining the “recovery” phase as a mom of a medically complex child to the “restoration” phase. Kara shares how to find the right self-care, and how that’s different from self-comfort. And as a contributor to The Gratitude Journal, she talks about the misconceptions of being grateful for a special needs journey.

Hit play and hear our whole conversation!

Want to connect with Kara? Follow her at @thespecialneedsmompodcast, visit her website kararyska.com or find her podcast on all major platforms.

Kara Ryska is the host and creator of The Special Needs Mom Podcast, a show exclusively focused on supporting mothers who parent children with disabilities and/or medical complexities. Kara is a mother to four children, one of which is the survivor of multiple brain tumors and survives with a spectrum of medical conditions and disabilities.

Calling Your Own Shots - an interview with Keylonda Wheeler of KeylondaWrites

Calling Your Own Shots - an interview with Keylonda Wheeler of KeylondaWrites

I am so happy I found Keylonda on Instagram! What a joy and light for the disability community. She is a shining example of living life on purpose and supporting inclusion!

Keylonda is a speech therapist by trade. When she didn’t see kids with disabilities – like the ones she helped in therapy – represented in children’s books, Keylonda decided to write her own. She didn’t want kids to miss out on friendships, just because they weren’t exposed to children with disabilities.

Don’t miss this episode where we talk about calling your own shot. Keylonda encourages you to change your self-talk from, “why me?” to “why not me?” Hit play and be inspired by my new friend, Keylonda!

Want to know more about Keylonda?

You can follow her @KeylondaWrites and or visit her website keylondawrites.com for more information on her books and services.

Keylonda Wheeler has always had a passion for helping others which inspired her to earn a degree in speech pathology. Practicing speech and language therapy in public, private, and virtual schools for several years, she has become increasingly aware of the need to create literature that brings acceptance of differences and disabilities. This awareness inspired her to write her children’s book series, the Inclusive K.R.E.W.E., bringing representation of disabled children. She and her husband, Jackie, along with their two children reside in Louisiana. When Keylonda is not empowering and encouraging others through her work, she can be found dancing and cooking in the kitchen.

100th episode - What I would tell my younger self

100th episode - What I would tell my younger self

What would I tell my younger self? For me, this means before I started my nonprofit. Before I left my teaching job in pursuit of my dreams. Before I began my leadership journey. What would I tell younger Amanda? Put in the work to become the best version of myself. Imagine how different those first years of my nonprofit would have been if I had worked on myself then like I am doing now. That commitment to myself, to my self-worth and self confidence are not something I learned in college. Becoming aligned to my purpose has taken me years, but how different the last decade would have been if I had put in the work sooner. This is your wake-up call! Don’t be like me - invest in YOU now, not 10 years from now.

    "Must be Nice"

    "Must be Nice"

Girl, are you saying this? I was. I can’t count how many times I used this phrase, in my head and out loud. A friend is taking a vacation? Must be nice. A colleague received an award? Must be nice. But when someone used this phrase to me about a recent fundraiser I put on for my nonprofit, those three words hit me in the gut. By telling someone it “must be nice” to have a big win, we discredit their achievement. Those three words take away from the years of hard work that it took to get to that moment. Hit play and learn about how this phrase changed my perspective on how I show up for others.
