Girl, Take the Lead!

Each week we explore Womanhood and Leadership with the goal to question the status quo and challenge our thinking so we celebrate every woman as a leader. Our episodes will interview leaders in the field, meet authors, explore books on the subject, hear inspiring stories, or talk with organizations leading the charge for women to lead. We’ll look at the different topics from different generational perspectives as my daughters, a Millennial and a Gen Z, will join me, a Boomer, from time to time. We hope to make you laugh and leave inspired as you hear our voices on this very important topic.

  2. 207. Building Meaningful Friendships: Overcoming Loneliness and Finding Joy with Ziem Nguyen Neubert

    DEC 11

    207. Building Meaningful Friendships: Overcoming Loneliness and Finding Joy with Ziem Nguyen Neubert

Ziem Nguyen Neubert, Executive Director of Project Cornerstone at the YMCA of Silicon Valley, joins us to discuss the topic of loneliness. Ziem leads an amazing team, working with school and community partners to support youth social and emotional well-being. Over 20 years of experience in education – serving as a teacher, coordinator, assistant principal, and principal – has been instrumental in supporting her work in building relationships and driving the vision for Project Cornerstone. Ziem is passionate about fostering positive skills, relationships, experiences, and honest conversations to create safe, caring, and equitable communities in Silicon Valley and beyond. Today, Project Cornerstone works with over 180 schools, reaching 62,000 students annually with the help of over 4,000 volunteers. Topics Covered:     Loneliness defined Social media connectedness and loneliness Misconceptions around loneliness Friendships and different kinds of connections 3 ways we take care of ourselves: assess, plan, act   3     Episode Takeaways   1.   We may not want to get rid of loneliness – if we never experience sadness how will we experience joy? It’s also a way to kick ourselves into gear and take some action when we notice it. It’s chronic loneliness we need to watch for.   2.   Social media isn’t all bad but may not be as meaningful to us as a way to connect with others. It’s the choices we make. While the social tools can assist us in connecting and be convenient/fast, we have the choice to connect this way or pick up the phone or make a plan to visit someone. 3.   There are a number of misconceptions around loneliness: like quantity matters, to feel lonely isn’t normal, we should feel shameful if we get lonely, loneliness only happens to “old” people, and introverts are lonelier than extroverts (we all need along alone time to recharge). Friendship is a key way to address loneliness but it’s good to assess, plan, and take action when choosing friends.   Ziem’s Resources The BIG document – report: “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation – The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community”       https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf   “US surgeon general Vivek Murthy: ‘Loneliness is like hunger, a signal we’re lacking something for survival’” (January 29, 2024) https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/jan/29/us-surgeon-general-vivek-murthy-loneliness-mental-health-epidemic-social-media   “New Surgeon General Advisory Raises Alarm about the Devastating Impact of the Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation in the United States” (May 3, 2023)      https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2023/05/03/new-surgeon-general-advisory-raises-alarm-about-devastating-impact-epidemic-loneliness-isolation-united-states.html “Loneliness Among Teens Has Increased Over the Years Violence, depression, and radicalization realities are telling.” (May 30, 2022)    https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/cultural-neuroscience/202205/loneliness-among-teens-has-increased-over-the-years   Card or Gift Items Ziem Liked from Our Store https://girltaketheleadpod.com/shop       Lotus Heart with the sentiment: “I carry your heart with me – I carry it in my heart”  e.e. cummings.     How to reach Ziem:   LinkedIn account: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ziem-neubert/ eMail: ziem@projectcornerstone.org Website: www.projectcornerstone.org You can make a donation there. 205. Resilient Leadership and Gender Norms: Insights from Lisa DeFrank-Cole

Lisa DeFrank-Cole, Gen X, joins Yo who talks with us about resiliency and other important traits for women leaders. Lisa is Director and F Duke Perry Endowed Professor of Leadership Studies at West Virginia University, and is widely known for her academic and practical expertise in women’s leadership.   She is a leadership coach and has been coauthor/coeditor of the following three academic books about women and leadership including an award-winning textbook:. Women and Leadership: Journey Toward Equity A Research Agenda for Gender and Leadership Women’s Leadership Journeys: Stories, Research, and Novel Perspectives Lisa overcame many stereotypes as a first-generation college graduate from Appalachia to reach where she is today. WV Living magazine named her a “Wonder Woman” in 2019, celebrating her for defying barriers and working towards uplifting West Virginia. Topics Covered: Why resiliency is an important leadership trait What other skills/traits women offer  What are gender norms & alignment   Likeability vs competence    Masculine and feminine traits    What are different strategies to promote equity  What is a leader identity (claiming vs granting)   3 Episode Takeaways   1.   Hardiness is needed for women to be leaders. Resilience is the ability to get back up after being knocked down and trying again. Women face challenges that are different than men when it comes to leadership. 2.   There’s a flexibility and empathy women bring to leadership situations. Because we are scanners women can assess where people are coming from. Research states women bring a transformational approach into organizations. Women can be the “glue” that holds things together which can be unrewarded and overlooked. 3.   Gender norms are changing but not equable yet. It is going in both directions for men and women. Leaders are seen in their ability to make decisions or be agents of change, and how society perceives these differently for men and women is the real challenge.   Card or Gift Items Lisa Liked from Our Store https://girltaketheleadpod.com/shop Snarky Cat, Trust Your Gut Card         Enjoy the Journey Bookmark   More About Lisa: Lisa has 15+ years as a speaker at the International Leadership Association Global Conferences presenting on Women and Leadership. 6. 203. Embracing Conflict: Transforming Tension into Growth with Judy Bornstein

    NOV 26

    203. Embracing Conflict: Transforming Tension into Growth with Judy Bornstein

Judy Bornstein, Boomer, joins me to discuss conflict – whoa! Judy is the Founder of C Suite Resolutions, where she provides mediation, ombuds services, conflict and negotiation coaching, and corporate trainings to organizations and executives. She has worked extensively as a CFO and Chief Compliance Officer, and brings her business experience to her work in addressing conflict. Topics Covered: Conflict definition Disagreement vs conflict Gossip Consequences of pushing down conflict Costs involved in unresolved conflicts How organizations set themselves up to handle conflicts Ombuds (trained independent designated neutral to build trust) Working in conflict and understanding our reactions Mediations Three Episode Takeaways   1.   If we only think of conflict as a fight we can lose that it can be a really powerful engine for creativity, change, and self-reflection. 2.   Responses to conflict can fall along gender lines. Many women are raised to “be nice” and “be good”, and told “don’t make a scene”. Women may be uncomfortable acknowledging a conflict so will be quiet or not address it directly, and there is less latitude for women to express conflict than is often afforded to men 3.   Humans are naturally (evolutionarily) wired to not like conflict, so that means our managers, bosses, and leaders probably don’t like conflict. As a result conflict may pushed down or silenced, which can lead to unintentional consequences like blaming the people involved rather than learning from the situation. Conflict is an inherent part of growth and innovation in organizations.   Great Quotes: Hope is not a strategy. We may have conflict because we are wise enough to see the complexity in our world. If you have conflict in your life it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you.  Conflict can be perplexing.   Episode Resources:   Baruch Bush: https://www.beyondintractability.org/bksum/bush-promise   More About Judy:   Judy is a doctoral candidate at Penn State University where her research interests center around organizational conflict. She holds a Masters in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law, and an MBA from Simmons University in Boston, where she graduated first in her class. Judy is a Mediation trainer and serves on the San Francisco Bar Association Mediation Panel and on the Arbitration Panel for FINRA (the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). She is a regular mediator for the Congress of Neutrals where she mediates court cases in Contra Costa County, CA. Judy also co-facilitates a Transformative Mediation group inside San Quentin State Prison, where she offers mediation and conflict-resolution training to incarcerated men interested in non-violent conflict resolution.     How to reach Judy:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/judybornstein/ Email: jb@csuiteresolutions.com Website: www.csuiteresolutions.com   How to reach Yo Canny:    Our website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. 202. Love Mondays Again: Tammy Alvarez’s Guide to Career Transformation

Tammy Alvarez, Gen X, joins Yo to discuss her new book, Escaping the Career Trap, Transform Your Apathy, a self-leadership blueprint for high achievers who want to experience true career fulfillment. Tammy is the CEO of the Career Winners Circle, author, professional keynote speaker, inspirational coach, and former corporate executive.  Her spirited “Break All the Rules” approach blends C-Suite experience with a pragmatic, results-based coaching style that helps business professionals create a big impact and love every Monday again.  Tammy’s book is written for people who feel disenfranchised and the “so what” is this: when you start to become the CEO of “You Inc.”, everything changes.  Topics Covered:       Research findings around apathy      How to transform apathy or “just good enough” phase       Being the CEO of your career        Beyond personal branding       Aligning companies & personal employee ambitions        Personal exploration of our passion       Skills to build resilience by failing successfully (experimental mindset)   3 Episode Takeaways   1.   We can break the career trap cycle by knowing what we do want to do, what we love doing, what we want to do next, and why you want to do it. If we find those things that are so natural for us and needed elsewhere, that’s where the magic happens. 2.   The Gartner research determined that 80% of respondents came back satisfied with their job and only 20% came back caring about what they do. When you connect your personal ambition to your personal aspiration with the company’s goals, individuals are more fulfilled and companies thrive. 3.   What if we treated our “frenemies” as our best customer or negotiate when new work comes along? We could be seen as a stronger leader. NOV 19

    201. The Broken Rung and Beyond: Women’s Roadmap to Leadership, A Discussion with Drew Turner

Drew Turner, Millennial, joins Yo to discuss the McKinsey Women in the Workplace 2024 – the 10th Anniversary Report. Drew began her leadership journey in retail at Williams Sonoma, eventually transitioning into Learning and Development at Tesla. She’s passionate about helping women break free from societal expectations and step confidently into leadership roles. Her vision is a world where women lead boldly and empathetically, breaking barriers for future generations. Drew is also Yo’s Chi Omega Fraternity sister and when they attended The Nancy Walton Laurie Leadership Institute, Yo knew she’d offer all of us rich leadership insights.   Topics Covered:        Women representation at C-suite positions   Barriers women face in the pipeline     Reaching gender parity Making career changes     Kinds of training and education needed      Micro aggressions 3 Episode Takeaways   1.   While women make up 29% of C-suite (2015 it was 17%) it will take 22 years for white women to reach parity - and even longer for women with color.   2.   The Broken Rung disconnect is about the lack of women moving into the manager level: For every 100 men, 81 women are promoted to manager (as of 2024). Another finding: women are no more optimistic than in the past.   3.   It’s good to remember that we can give ourselves permission to change it up by listening to ourselves and our intuition. All the experiences we have come along with us in making a career change.   Episode Resource: Article: https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inclusion/women-in-the-workplace   More About Drew   As the founder of her coaching business, Drew focuses on empowering women to overcome self-doubt and burnout, helping them lead with confidence and authenticity.
