Nelson Mandela and Apartheid Revisited | 130

This year marks 35 years since Nelson Mandela was released from prison and apartheid was dismantled in South Africa. To mark the anniversary we are revisiting an episode that looks at some of aspects of the anti-apartheid struggle that you might not know: pirate radio and protest songs. Pirate radio was a weapon used by the African National Congress to inspire black South Africans and to counter propaganda and misinformation by the apartheid government. While protest songs performed by western musicians played a pivotal role in raising awareness in the rest of the world about the injustices in South Africa. For centuries, disobedient children in Austria and other Alpine countries have faced a truly terrifying Christmas consequence for their misbehavior — a dreaded visit from Krampus. This is the best pod for anyone interested in learning about what pop culture and world events shaped the western world in the 90s. It’s both nostalgic and reflective bringing listeners comfort and knowledge! To the reviews who say it’s too “liberal” or “political”… Don’t let them dissuade you. This is a show about historical events and ultimately their impact on today. Some of the things we did are more incredible than we could have ever imagined, and other times we really messed up. There is nothing political about reflection; it’s part of the beauty of getting to look back! If your worldview hasn’t changed much in 30 years, this show is for you. If your worldview has drastically changed since you were a kid, this show can help you understand why. THANK YOU to this show who makes a great effort to uncover the stories that us 90s kids were too young to understand while reminding us of the bops that filled our walkmans and VCRs. Keep up the good work!

Love y’all but why in every episode do y’all apply 2024 moral standards and judgements to each topic? It seems disingenuous and self serving to constantly throw out the same critiques when obviously 35 years have passed and things change. Just seems like the writer has a journalism degree instead one is history, with an unshakeable urge to virtue signal weekly.

I have enjoyed this podcast series as a 90s kid (born in ‘90) and I appreciate the nostalgia that it brings. I would have given this series five stars, but I noticed that in at least a couple episodes there seems to be a radically liberal, ideological presentation of some people and events in history, which ultimately pits this podcast against half of all Americans. Not a good idea if you want to attract a wide audience. Overall, it’s a good podcast. I just wish I didn’t have to worry about the radical ideology leaking from it.
