YouTube Is the New Curriculum (and a big list of our favorite shows)

Are you ready for this? It's time to rethink everything you think you know about "screens" and how kids learn. We're making a case for why YouTube beats a science textbook, why PBS Kids is can be more than a pre-dinner pacifier, and why even Marvel movies (yes, Marvel movies) are worthy of being a central part of your homeschool. We hope you'll feel inspired (and feel the freedom!) to ditch your lesson plans and enjoy some great shows with the kids--because this is totally amazing and totally real learning.

My son is 12 and he hates doing anything right now even though he will fully acknowledge that he sees the benefit, feels good after he completes schoolwork, etc. He fights everything beforehand and I know so much of it is just changing hormones, but I would love suggestions for ways to navigate this season of schooling and make it as enjoyable as possible for him."

    Simplify Spring and Summer

Spring brings an impulse to slow down and simplify. Rather than look at it like it's a slump, we're reframing things: it's ok to change our pace! We talk about the value of taking a break, evaluate what's serving us and giving us life, and set up some "tentpoles" for summer.

    When Hobbies Are Your Homeschool

    When Hobbies Are Your Homeschool

When there’s joy, there’s learning! We're talking all about hobbies in our homeschool: the why, the how, and all the ways these seemingly trivial activities and interests can actually unlock deep learning, self-confidence, and lifelong joy for our kids.

As always, you’ll also get an Aha Moment and our LTWs at the end. Plus you can join us on Patreon to hear us talk through this week’s listener question.

    Takeaways
-Hobbies are something we do because we want to, and doing something because you want to helps us focus and learn more.

-Hobbies create a sense of success more than we might experience doing things we don't want to do. Hobbies help us to spiral UP!

-Hobbies support mental health and emotional regulation.

-Hobbies give our kids a noncoercive experience of learning. They help us learn to love learning and enjoy the process of hard work.

-Hobbies get us into a flow state. They build our confidence to try new things and explore more.

-Hobbies reduce stress. Making time for hobbies now helps our kids establish the lifelong habit of cultivating hobbies.

-A flexible schedule and routine gives us time to explore hobbies.

-When kids have time for hobbies, they’ll come back to the table refreshed.

-Encourage and support hobbies--even ones we don’t understand and ones that happen on (gasp!) screens.

-Homeschool can be built around hobbies or playing, with academics in between—because hobbies are learning!

-Create excitement about the day by putting hobbies first, followed by hard work.

-Kids are figuring out who they are and how to have a full life when they explore their interests.

    -What not to do:
-turn their hobby into an academic thing
    -invalidate their screen-based hobbies
-go overboard or get over involved

Finding a Rhythm, Unschooling, and Screens

Finding a Rhythm, Unschooling, and Screens

We've been answering listener questions all season over on Patreon, and we wanted to share one of those exclusive episodes with you! Ashley asked the questions many of us are wrestling with right now: “I want to feel ok with doing less and just letting learning happen naturally, but I feel like public school stole the spark of love for learning from my 8-year old who went to K and 1st. How do I bring the spark back?” She also asked about unschooling (can I really do it?), finding a rhythm (HOW?!), cooking (does an air fryer count?), and self-care (thanks to Rocket Royale and Roblox): “Is this just a season though? It’s been a year.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is an episode that is normally exclusive to our Patreon community. Patrons get all our Q&A episodes this season, plus 2 monthly episodes year round. Get more content and join our fantastic community of amazing homeschool parents at patreon.com/homeschoolunrefined

Towels

So funny I’ve been avoiding replacing my towels from 20 years ago bc the store closed. They are Charisma too, ha I still love them 19 years later but 5 kids later I need more, thanks for the 411

Loving this Podcast and the Vision of Homeschooling this Way!

I’m a new homeschooler, and I’ve been devouring homeschooling podcasts right and left. This one truly shines in so many ways— but I especially love how clear and courageous they are in supporting important causes. It’s so essential that we raise our next generation with a commitment to equality and integrity, and its wonderful to see the homeschooling community come on board. These women show their empathy, dedication, and experience as homeschoolers with every word and each show I’ve listened to, has given me both practical advice and the background behind it, which I very much appreciate. Its lovely to feel less alone! Thank you!

Mama2Charlotte ,

Used to love this podcast...

I used to love this podcast. It was my go-to! But now, with the most recent episode, I’m questioning it, especially with all the research on technology and kids’ brains, the effects of “screen-time education” and the moods of children, and the startling effects of too much screen-time and childhood depression.
