763 episodes

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

    Scott Talks to Jodi Miller

    Scott Talks to Jodi Miller

Jodi Miller is a comedian, writer, and actress who’s been performing stand up for over 20 years and has also done 4 military tours including going overseas to entertain troops in Afghanistan. She currently works as the head writer for the syndicated comic game show Funny You Should Ask, and she hosts the show The World’s Funniest Weather. Her new comedy special Decades in the Making, is available now on Youtube.

Laura opens the show by talking about where her and Scott met Jodi, as well as asking her about her thoughts on being a mom growing up and when she finally decided to try to conceive. After being unable to conceive naturally, that was when Jodi decided to adopt.

Jodi then tells the story behind adopting her daughter, which included a last minute and unexpected phone call from her lawyer instructing her to fly out to Kentucky the following day, during COVID, to pick up her daughter. This leads to a realization of just how hard it is to be a single parent to a young child.

After that, Laura asks Jodi about her current dating life as a single mother in Los Angeles, as well as her old podcast Don’t Call Me Ma’am. Jodi then tells a popular story from her life about nailing the audition for America’s Got Talent, only to be excused by producers for no reason. This leads to some praise from Laura over Jodi’s work on the comic TV game show Funny You Should Ask.

He has appeared in over 200 titles and was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame in 2019.

Scott Talks to Dr. Michael Caparrelli

Scott Talks to Dr. Michael Caparrelli

Dr. Michael Caparrelli graduated from Zion Bible College, and thereafter, pastored an inner city church for 16 years. In 2021, he finished his PhD in Advanced Studies in Behavioral Science. Currently, he’s a keynote speaker in churches, prisons, schools & other venues across the U.S. on a wide variety of mental health subjects. He’s authored five books that help the psychologically troubled overcome life adversities. His most recent book, Monster Mirror, features his 100 Hour Case Study on David Berkowitz, the ‘Son of Sam’, a convicted serial killer who held New York City hostage with fear from 1976 – 1977 and gave his life to Christ in prison in 1988.

Dr. Caparrelli starts off by giving a bit of his background as a pastor for 16 years, before deciding to get his PhD after suffering 2 heart attacks. He goes on to explain his troubled childhood with a father in prison and being sent to juvenile prison as a teenager.

He then dives into the case of David Berkowitz, from first hearing about “the Son of Sam” as a kid to eventually meeting with him in prison. Laura asks Michael about jailhouse conversions, and how he deals with the emotional exhaustion that comes with being a pastor who visits violent criminals in prison.

After that they get more in-depth about the life of David Berkowitz, the crimes he committed, and various family members who were affected by his murders. Michael gives his opinions on David’s mental health issues, and goes to explore some of the things that could turn someone into a serial killer.

Before they wrap, Dr. Caparrelli explains the title of his book: Monster Mirror: 100 Hours with David Berkowitz, Once Known As Son of Sam, On Mental Health, & Evil Phenomena

Found through Scott’s podcast what was that like

Wow! Laura you’re such an amazing host, after your episode was featured on his podcast (listed in subject line of review) I binge listened to multiple episodes you and your partner put out; they’re all excellent, authentic, heartfelt, and lesson-learning content and I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon this underrated gem of a storytelling platform.

All the best - I am now following and look forward to new and riveting “outsider” stories that give us a glimpse of what it’s like not to be part of society’s decided-upon meaning of what’s normal and what’s not. So in awe over here :) Ellen Portland, Oregon
