The Menendez Brothers: Monster Behind the Mask (Part 7)
Beverly Hills, located just southwest of the Hollywood Hills, was and still is a place that the rich, famous and glamorous choose to make their homes. Known for its opulence and luxury, the homes in Beverly Hills are some of the most expensive in the United States, with some properties worth tens of millions of dollars. But behind the country clubs, cocktail hours and shopping trips, there was something much darker brewing in a high end Beverly Hills neighborhood. On August 20th, 1989, business executive Jose Menendez and his wife Kitty were brutally murdered while sitting in the living room of their sprawling Mediterranean style mansion, and what seemingly made this tragedy worse was the fact that their two son’s, Lyle and Erik, were the ones to make the gruesome discovery of their bodies. Suddenly orphaned, the Menendez brothers were initially looked at with sympathy, but soon they would be on trial for the murder of their parents. Lyle and Erik didn’t deny that they had taken their parents' lives, but according to them it was because they were scared and broken down after a lifetime of abuse. At the time, most people believed this was a fabricated excuse, and the prosecution gave greed and money as the true motive. A tragedy and trial played out for the world on television, ending with both Erik and Lyle confined at the Richard Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego for life, with no chance of parole. Recently, newly discovered evidence and testimony has raised questions of whether Erik and Lyle were being honest about the constant state of stress and fear their parents forced them to live under.

Crime Weekly News: Kouri Richins Loses Lawyers & Elderly 'Serial Slingshot Shooter' Arrested
Kouri Richins is a Utah mother and wife who, in 2022, allegedly poisoned her husband, Eric Richins, with a fatal dose of fentanyl. She was arrested and charged with his murder in 2023, but not before writing a book for children on how to handle losing a parent. Now, her lawyer has filed to withdraw from her case, and she makes her first public comments since her arrest.
Also in recent news, an 81-year-old man was arrested for terrorizing a neighborhood with a slingshot for over 10 years.

Crime Weekly News: Parents Charged With Murder & Kevin Spacey Documentary Released
In November of 2023, the Tucson police department responded to a home on East Limberlost Drive where they found an 11 year old boy who an autopsy would later reveal had died from sepsis.
Investigators would learn that the 11 year old, who suffered from multiple medical conditions, was completely dependent on his caregivers; his mother, 33 year old Ariel Lee Horn and her boyfriend, 29 year old Charles Jackson McClellan Jr. According to the autopsy report, the child was found with extensive lesions throughout his lower body which were attributed to not receiving proper medical attention due to neglect from his mother and her boyfriend.

I’ve been listening for about a year and a half, and I listen to many other true crime podcasts but I have yet to find one that is as well rounded and well researched as crime weekly. No one can do it like Stephanie Harlow does, and having Derricks knowledge and background to add to the discussion creates one of the most unique experiences for the listener. You both just keep on getting better and better with every case you bring to the table, you some how find ways to make it more interesting, you are factual, and yet empathetic. Not only do you advocate for the victims( sometimes without even having to say it), you use your platform to do your best to make difference in anyway that you can. It’s sad that a lot of other podcasts have this huge platform and don’t try to make a change or do something good with what they have created, I know there are some out there, but not enough. ( not including Mile higher podcast, love them too). You are both amazing hosts and great people, thank you for the content you bring us whilst taking advantage of this platform. You deserve all of the positivity coming your way 💕

The premise of the show is great, but Derek rarely gets to put his detective hat on and form an opinion. It’s a shame

Update: I’m glad I stuck with them and gave this a chance. They still convey their strong opinions but it feels a lot less judgy in later episodes so it makes me appreciate their point of view a lot more. This is one of the only 2 true crime podcasts I enjoy listening to. It doesn’t feel like news and it doesn’t feel like click bait. At this point, the only thing that I don’t like about this podcast is that I’m all caught up and can’t binge each story.

Here’s the thing. These episodes are so good because of the passion behind the research. They are also difficult for the same reason. So much judgment of everyone, even the listeners. If you can get past the caustic spewing of negativity that seems to come up from time to time, and the waxing on well past the point has been made, this is a pretty decent podcast. I do wish the hosts had more of an open mind and I agree with some of the other reviews about the weird kind of flirty dynamic between the two. But to their credit, they are doing things the way they want and if you don’t like it they seem to be fine with not having you as a listener. To be fair, I started at the beginning and haven’t quite made it through the first season so maybe it gets better.
