Episode 124: Race Spotlight - Warriors Ultra Run

Episode 124: Race Spotlight - Warriors Ultra Run

We all know that Ultras come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There is only one common denominator, an ultra, by definition is any race over 26.2 miles. In our race spotlights over the past year, we have never covered a race like this one.

We first heard about this race from our good friend Michelle Goldberg who connected us with the race director and we are grateful to have runners in the community that continue to make recommendations to us about guests and races. Thank you all for that!

On to the race, the Warriors UltraRun is an overnight, underground running experience that carries runners over 28 miles as they recreate the escape route from the iconic 1979 cult film by Walter Hill. After attending a 1 AM Conclave, held at a secret location in the Bronx, runners dressed as gang members pass movie shooting sights as they race for Coney Island. The course passes key landmarks from the movie and will run through Times Square and over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Have we got your attention? It has gotten ours. The race is one of a kind. And there is so much more to learn about the race, so take some time to listen to our chat with the RD Todd Aydelotte. Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and if you love the episode make sure to like and subscribe!

Episode 123: Aaron Stacy - Going Primal, Staying Humble, and Making Others Your Why

Episode 123: Aaron Stacy - Going Primal, Staying Humble, and Making Others Your Why

Aaron Stacy is a certified badass. And while he is probably likely to get mistaken for a muscle and fitness model vs a trail and ultra runner, there is no question that this guy is a monster on the course. But it wasn’t always that way. As a lifelong law enforcement officer, running was not part of the picture until 2016, when, following the loss of 50 lbs so that he could train with his daughter, his wife dared him to run a last minute half marathon and a new love was born. He has since embraced a primal lifestyle, built a thriving coaching business, and uses his passion for helping others to help navigate the pain cave during tough races, 3 of which he has coming up over the next 3 months. So tune in while we chat with the Primal Run Coach about his inspiring story, how he is training for a huge summer, and why leadership and humility are at the foundation of everything he does.

    Episode 122: Race Spotlight - Cowboy 200

    Episode 122: Race Spotlight - Cowboy 200

We LOVE episode recommendations for race spotlights or for guests on the show. And that is how we first heard of this race out of Nebraska. The Cowboy 200 was recommended by our friend Tyler (@crimsontyler88).

On to the race, the Cowboy 200 is a point-to-point 200-mile footrace along the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska. This is a rails-to-trails course and is run on a non-technical, 100% runnable, crushed limestone path. NO MOTOR VEHICLES ARE ON THE TRAIL! There will be short paved sections when running through towns along the route. But that basically means, for 200 miles, you aren't dealing with cars along the way.

The 200 miler has a cutoff of 84 hours (25:12/mile average) and based on some of our research looks like an incredible option for those runners looking to try out a 200 mile race that may be a little less daunting than one with a large amount of elevation.

If you have been thinking about a 200 mile race, it may be time to add the Cowboy 200 to your list. We spoke with the race directors, Casey and Chase Hammond about the race and think you may be inspired to sign up! Enjoy the show and, if you like the content, leave us a comment or subscribe to let us know.

Episode 121: Melissa Londry - Community, Hallucinations & The 240 Mile Tridge to Bridge

Episode 121: Melissa Londry - Community, Hallucinations & The 240 Mile Tridge to Bridge

Melissa Londry ran her first 50K back in 2015, but it was during COVID that she really got warmed up, knocking out her first 100 miler as a virtual race and then completing an astounding 45 UltraSignup events since Feb of 2020, which doesn’t even include other monster efforts such as the 240 mile Tridge to Bridge which is an unofficial and unsupported race in Michigan that she completed in 2023.  She is currently gearing up to take on the Massanutten 100, another round of the Tridge to Bridge 240 in July, and then our recently spotlighted Mamba 100 in November, which looks like an absolute blast.  So plug in to hear us chat about her experiences, her training, and what prompted her to take over Race Directing duties for the New River 50K, which just so happened to be her first ultra finish back in 2015. As always, we would love to hear what you think! Enjoy!

    Episode 120: Race Spotlight - Daytona 100

    Episode 120: Race Spotlight - Daytona 100

The DAYTONA 100 is a point to point race that starts from Jacksonville Beach and goes south to Ponce Inlet, which is about 10 miles south of Daytona. The course is flat and is a solid choice for a first ultra or to set a PR. The race is run on pavement, so this is not a 100 miles of running on the sand down the coast.

If you hear Florida and think, oh man, that is going to be real hot and humid for a 100 miler, don’t lose heart, this race takes place in December, so that should help alleviate some of those concerns. Let us not also neglect the fact of who the race director is either.

Bob Becker proves that age is just a number, and embodies our ethos of Showing Up. Bob holds the age group world record for 48 hours with 167.5 miles that he set in June 2023 at the age of 78. And, is also the oldest finisher of Badwater 135 that he finished in 2022 at the age of 77. Bob shatters the myth that we have to hang up the shoes, just because we are getting a little bit older.

Runribbit ,

Love the URG!

Such a fantastic show - I truly love every episode and guest, and the race spotlights have been awesome. Today’s episode with Howie Stern was SUCH a gem!!! I really enjoyed listening on my long run. So nice to hear about Howie’s story and experiences- I was transported by his vivid description of hardrock and feel like I have a much better appreciation for the empathy and humanity that goes into every aspect of his photography. And such a stellar race history! 🙌

Perfect

So good for all of us non-elites to hear about badasses in the sport. Thanks for all you and please keep it up. Jake Jackson made me want to join him in the 24-Hour World Championship!

Episode 103 with Laz

This was one of my favorite episodes of any podcast. Gary Cantrell is an icon. The documentary on Netflix was one of the first videos I watched when I started to the sport.
