    Ziya Tong: We Are the Plastic People

    This week's guest is Ziya Tong, an award-winning author and broadcaster, best known for her work with Discovery’s flagship science show, Daily Planet, and NOVA ScienceNow on PBS. She is the author of the best-selling book The Reality Bubble, which was shortlisted for Canada’s most prestigious non-fiction literary prize, and won the Lane Anderson Award for best science writing. Ziya served as the Vice Chair of WWF Canada and currently serves as a trustee of WWF International.
    Ziya co-directed a new documentary called Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics with Ben Addelman, and she stars alongside Executive Producer Rick Smith.
    "We live in a time where some of our greatest threats are invisible. Like the climate crisis, microplastic pollution cannot be: it spans the globe, chokes up rivers and animals, and insidiously infiltrates the human body. As a science journalist and author, I have been reporting on the threat of plastic for almost two decades and believe that now more than ever, we need to reveal the connection between planetary health and human health, which is why I’ve put my own body on the line for the “Plastic People” project. As part of my journey, I will test my own home, my own food, and even my own feces for microplastics. We are very fortunate to also have a world-first for this project, as we meet surgeons and scientists who are probing the human brain to reveal whether microplastics can cross the blood-brain barrier. The results of testing here will be incredibly significant."
    Ziya discusses her experience premiering the documentary at South by Southwest and the positive reception it received. She explains that the threat of microplastics is similar to the climate crisis in that it is invisible to the naked eye. She also shares some shocking findings from her research, including the presence of microplastics in the human body and the intentional spread of microplastics in the food chain. She also talks about her experience as a first-time filmmaker and the challenges she faced as a director.
    Ziya also discusses the challenges of dealing with misinformation online, the experiences of women in the media industry, and the importance of supporting upcoming female journalists. Ziya mentions Sarika Suzuki and Severn Suzuki (David Suzuki's daughters) as women she admires in the media.

    What an honour; this week's guest is iconic Canadian broadcaster Marilyn Denis who's just been announced as the recipient of the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards Lifetime Achievement Award.
    During this conversation, Marilyn reflects on her career and the changes in the media industry. She discusses her transition from the television show and her new routine. She also talks about the pride she felt when she first started hosting CityLine and some industry challenges along the way. She expresses excitement about the next generation of broadcasters and their ability to be multifaceted and flexible. She emphasizes the importance of being present in the moment and navigating social media, especially being present for her granddaughter and family. She also reflects on embracing age and wisdom and reminds young women to have purpose and passion in their work.
    In 2023, Marilyn announced she would bid adieu as host of the popular Canadian Screen Award-winning series THE MARILYN DENIS SHOW, following 13 incredible seasons and a 34-year career of daily daytime television.
    Formerly co-host of Roger & Marilyn, the veteran radio broadcaster now hosts Marilyn Denis and Jamar, weekday mornings on Toronto’s #1-ranked radio station CHUM 104.5. A definite trailblazer, Edmonton-born Marilyn became the first female DJ at KRPL in Moscow, Idaho. She then moved to Calgary where she held various radio and television positions including programmer, music director, and traffic reporter. But it wasn’t until she auditioned to become Roger Ashby’s co-host, that Marilyn found her niche. After interviewing dozens of broadcasters and actresses, Marilyn breezed into CHUM FM in July 1986. After chatting with her for a few brief minutes, Roger immediately remarked, “I think we’ve found the right one.”
    Marilyn has always balanced her dynamic radio career with her candid television presence. She first began her career in television by reporting on sports, weather, and entertainment at CFCN-TV (CTV Calgary) and working as a freelance reporter for TSN. Marilyn also shared hosting duties on Bravo!'s Gemini Award-winning concert series LIVE AT THE REHEARSAL HALL and was host of the popular daily show CITYLINE for nearly 20 years.
     A triple Gemini Award-winner (including back-to-back Viewers Choice Awards), Marilyn received The Rosalie Award, honouring Canadian women who have paved the way for others in radio broadcasting in 2006. Marilyn is the recipient of the Allan Waters Broadcast Lifetime Achievement Award, which was awarded at the 2017 Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards;_ _listed as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 by WXN_;_ _selected as the University of Idaho’s (where Marilyn studied broadcasting) 2017 Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree recipient.

    Sarah Burke interviews musicologist, assistant professor and researcher Jada Watson. Jada shares her background in classical music and her transition to researching gender representation in the music industry. She talks about her published research, participating in a recent panel at CRS in Nashville (Country Radio Seminar) and the controversy surrounding Beyoncé song 'Texas Hold 'em.' She also shares surprising findings about the song and its impact on new listeners. The conversation then shifts to the lack of representation at festivals, particularly in headlining positions. The Ottawa Blues Fest lineup is examined as an example. Jada emphasizes the importance of actively supporting underrepresented artists through streaming, buying music, attending shows, and sharing their work. She also highlights the need for intersectional representation and creating safe spaces in the industry.

    Jada Watson is an assistant professor of Digital Humanities in the School of Information Studies at the University of Ottawa. She also coordinates Digital Humanities programming for the Faculty of Arts. She has taught both in the School of Music and is the coordinator for the Digital Humanities program and her research reflects this intersection. 
    Principal Investigator of the SongData project, her research aims to harness the potential of music industry data to study how popular music genres form, develop and change over time. Centered on issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in country music, her research focuses on interpreting the “Big Data” emerging from the popular music industry's efforts to track radio, streams, and sales (and ultimately capture revenue), in the current regulatory and media environment.  
    This research has been featured in national and international publications, as well as in media outlets such as Apple Country Radio’s Color me Country with Rissi Palmer, the New York Times’s Popcast, CBC's The National and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Findings emerging from SongData projects have been cited as a major source in a report submitted to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission in response to the National Association of Broadcasters' proposal to deregulate radio ownership, as well as in a Grammy Recording Academy report on inclusion and diversity in the music industry. In 2020, she was a research partner on CMT’s EqualPlay initiative.
    Much of her research is available publicly via SongData.ca. She has written for various news outlets (including NBC’s Think series, Nashville Scene, The Nashville Briefing, and Toronto Star) and has spoken to industry audiences at MusicBiz, SXSW, Triple A radio’s NonCommvention, and Country Radio Seminar. Her work on representation in the industry also appears in Popular Music & Society, Popular Music History, and American Music Perspectives. She has chapters in several edited collections and is co-editor of Whose Country Music? Genre, Identity, and Belonging in Twenty-First Century Country Music Culture, a collection of essays on country music in the twenty-first century with Paula J. Bishop (Cambridge UP).

    Introducing the Women in Media Network

    In celebration of International Women's Day, host Sarah Burke shares a solo episode announcing the Women in Media Network. On the three-year anniversary of the Women in Media Podcast, today, Canadian media personality and producer Sarah Burke is excited to announce the launch of the Women In Media Network. The Women in Media Network (WIMN) is a new home for women and gender-diverse podcasters on a mission to uplift, inspire, and empower.
    Her story, spanning over fifteen years in media, is not just her own, but a mirror to the experiences of countless women in media. Facing challenges that are all too common – being undervalued, underpaid, and often belittled in male-dominated workspaces, Sarah took matters into her own hands with a goal to bring others along.
    What first began as a single podcast where media personalities could share their stories and celebrate their successes without judgment, now holds a guest list of 75 incredible women and gender-diverse individuals and has bloomed into a collective of aligned minds. This led to the birth of WIMN, an organization dedicated to empowering women through podcasting, content creation, and education within a supportive community. 
    Burke’s vision for WIMN is more than just an advocacy group; it's a movement. “It's about transforming the media landscape into a diverse and equitable arena where women's voices are not just heard, but are influential,” explains Burke. “The media landscape is in a perpetual state of turbulence right now, and I’m excited about empowering creators with newfound freedom from the organizations they were once tied to, and the power to make decisions regarding their content.” Burke plans to expand the network with a special dedication to help eliminate financial barriers and empower Black voices, Indigenous voices, and other voices of colour.
    Burke’s commitment to this cause is not just about challenging the status quo, but rewriting it. Under her leadership, WIMN serves as a sanctuary to amplify underrepresented voices, share wisdom, and create a better future for content creators in the process. Sarah's journey and the work of WIMN hope to light the path for a future where every creator maintains ownership of their own content, unencumbered by the barriers of the past.
    The WIMN is proud to amplify charitable initiatives in support of organizations which provide support to women and girls who have been subjected to violence, trafficking and/or homelessness. In honour of Women’s History Month, Sarah will be donating proceeds from WIMN merchandise to The London Abused Women Centre, in the community where she not only studied media, but became a media personality. Stay tuned for more about merchandise, but for now, Sarah encourages donations to the London Abused Women’s Centre HERE, and also to the Assaulted Women’s Helpline, a free, anonymous telephone line for women in Ontario experiencing any form of abuse.
