Wells to poet Maya Angelou to Aretha Franklin, the queen of soul music, Black women have made important contributions to the United States in a variety of areas, including politics, science, the arts, and social justice. Celebrating and recognizing Black women during Women’s History Month is an important way to honor their legacy and inspire future generations. 

In this episode we talk about how Black women have played a crucial role in advancing human rights and freedoms, contributing to our knowledge base, and improving our world with Dr. Ashley Farmer an associate professor in the Departments of History and African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

Most scientists agree that if the world is to achieve net zero by 2050 and secure a livable Earth, efforts to implement renewable energy need to be accelerated. Net zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. We reach net zero when the amount we add is no more than the amount taken away. Of course, looking to build a better, more sustainable future has been talked about for years.  But are we getting closer to achieving this shared global imperative? 

Addressing such questions are two guests: Ed White, Vice President and principal analyst at Clarivate, based in London; and Shara Mohtadi, former chief of staff for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, DC.

In 2022, Clarivate named 20 world-class researchers from four countries as Citation Laureates. The impact of their work is immense and represents pioneering research worthy of recognition and celebration. We expect that some of these researchers will go on to receive a Nobel Prize, demonstrating once again the strong link between their substantial citation records and their influence on peers.

The fate of the Earth is closely tied to our oceans. Given the toll that humans have exacted on the marine environment within a relative handful of decades, the need for detailed scientific scrutiny of our ocean basins has never been more acute, and a new global report from Clarivate highlights the growing body of research in this area, particularly around sustainability and topics such as microplastics in the ocean.  

The report’s two authors, Ross Potter, Senior Data Scientist at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and Brodie Pearson, Assistant Professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, are interviewed in this episode of Ideas To Innovation Season 2.
