    Port Hope police pursue service agreements to provide levels of service under new provincial rules

    The Canadian Severity Crime Index measures changes in the level of crime within communities across Canada. All crimes are assigned a weight based on their seriousness. Statistics Canada releases these figures every year. Port Hope had the second-lowest score, according to the most recent report. This makes it one of the safest communities in the country. On today’s show, Port Hope Police Chief Tim Farquharson will talk about what is going on with local policing. He will discuss some of the options his force is exploring to find ways to provide services to meet the community’s needs. But he must also meet the demands of the new provincial rules and regulations for police put in place in April. He will also chat about the upcoming police budget plus upcoming plans for the force.

    International film festival portrays issues facing working people at Cobourg library in December

    The Canadian Labour International Film Festival will be held in Northumberland in December at the Cobourg Library. Admission is free. Organizer Derek Blackadder says the festival is an opportunity for the public to watch films from around the world that speak to the issues facing working people. He is quick to emphasize these movies are not necessarily about unions. Instead, they represent the struggles and issues many people face in their jobs.     In Their Words: County reaches deal spending more than $500,000 to meet shelter bylaw

    Northumberland County and the town of Cobourg reached a deal earlier this week that will allow the county to open its warming room at 310 Division Street. This In Their Words shares the open session where council finalized its direction. Most of the meeting was in closed session due to the legal nature of the information. The open session was short, only five minutes. County council dropped its plan to appeal the Emergency Care Establishment bylaw. It also approved $587,700 for additional expenses to meet the bylaw. CAO Jennifer Moore said Friday $300,000 will go to additional security. Another $67,700 towards property management for responding to off-site waste and other concerns beyond the 310 Division Street property. A new position is created for a compliance coordinator. This person will make sure all aspects of the bylaw are followed, along with any other regulations placed on the shelter, she said. Then, there is $20,000 for the additional insurance required by the town’s bylaw, she explained. There is $100,000 for contingency, she said. The money will come from the County General Reserve to fund any costs for 2024 and that the 2025 Budget be updated to include financing requirements for ECE By-law compliance from the levy.     In Their Words: Port Hope politicians debate police amalgamation

    Bonus Mid-week Episode The Port Hope council discussed a letter from the Town of Cobourg proposing a potential merger or collaboration with their police services. Councillor Adam Pearson emphasized the community's support for the local police and concerns about adding turmoil during significant municipal changes. Port Hope council made it clear it is not interested in amalgamating police services with Cobourg or Hamilton Township Tuesday night at a regular council meeting. However, it did not rule out exploring a police report from Northumberland County Council or reviewing the current services to find possible savings. As you will hear in this In Their Words, Port Hope is one of the safest communities in Canada. Councillor Les Andrews told council it has the second-lowest score on the Crime Severity Index in the country. It measures the changes in the level of the of crime within communities across Canada. Pearson made a motion saying in part: "Council of Municipality of Port Hope believes that a strong and supported local police force is necessary to provide a more community-specific approach to policing, and whereas the County of Northumberland has reviewed the potential for amalgamation police services through their consideration of report Police Service Review at the September 18, 2024 meeting and has not taken any further action on the subject. Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Council of the Municipality of Port Hope receives this correspondence for information and thanks the town of Coburg for bringing this matter forward for consideration, and further, the Council of the municipality of Port Hope take no further action on the subject of amalgamation and or expansion of policing with the town of Cobourg and the Township of Hamilton for the remainder of this term of Council." It was defeated. A majority of council disagreed with the clause, which set a limit on discussion for the remainder of this term. Some politicians want the option to discuss possible changes to the police force during budget deliberations, while others want to learn more about the Northumberland County police study tabled in September. In the end, many felt the clause was too limiting. You listen and see if it is the right decision.     First responder shares experience of saving lives after receiving award at Survivor Night ceremony

    Last week, 19 people got to meet someone special. It is not what you think. Those 19 people experienced a heart attack somewhere in Northumberland County. But thanks to the paramedics, they were able to attend a ceremony bringing together the lifesavers and the patients. The ninth annual Survivors Night ceremony was held at the Cobourg Lion’s Centre. The first responders and those they saved were recognized through the Lightning Bold Awards. In this interview, you will meet one of the recipients, County paramedic Matthew Rollwagen. He will share the story behind his award. You will also hear from his boss, Northumberland Paramedics Chief Susan Brown. Together, they will talk about this emotional night as survivors and responders are reunited.

    Two years ago, nearly to the exact same date, I did an interview with Northumberland Paramedics Chief Susan Brown and County Paramedic Matthew Rollwagen. Matthew has won multiple Lightning Bolt awards over the years. In fact, he was honoured several times last week. A lot has happened over those two years. Have a listen to this interview from October 2022. The pandemic was easing and there were a different set of challenges and successes the chief and her department were facing. But more important, you get to hear more stories about lives being saved and the work of the paramedics in Northumberland.

    In The Words: County politicians debate next steps to open shelter

    Once more, county staff were directed to negotiate a settlement over the outstanding issues related to Cobourg's Emergency Care Establishment bylaw at a five-hour meeting on Oct. 29 . They were given five days to get it done. Following a series of deputations, multiple motions were presented in an effort to settle what the county should do to get its license from the town. Multiple factors were placing pressure on politicians to move forward. Transition House's capacity was reduced to 10 beds from 22 following a recent Cobourg Fire Department inspection, which included a fire safety plan update. Then, there is the impending sale of the former Brookside Youth Detention Centre on King Street. This is anticipated to uproot the unsheltered people living in an encampment. Plus, the weather is getting colder, and no county-run warming room is currently available. You can listen to the 40 minutes of the final debate, during which politicians debate and pass the final decision. A separate segment also discusses the $40,000 to pay for hotel rooms.
