How We Survive
For “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal, joining the Navy fresh out of college was a defining chapter in his life. It was the 1980s; the Cold War and the Soviet Union was the greatest threat. Fast-forward through 40 years — and one career change — and the threat looks different. Climate change has no face or flag, but it will fundamentally change the way the U.S. military trains and fights. It already has. “How We Survive” is an award-winning podcast from Marketplace about the messy business of climate solutions. In our sixth season, Kai Ryssdal travels to far corners of the world to shine a light on how the institution that shaped him could shape our climate future. From a small Arctic village to a remote island in the Pacific, we’ll take you to the front lines of the fight against the crisis.

Kai’s reporting on the US. Military preparations for climate change was insightful and sobering . A superb piece of documentary reporting!
The military aspect

Congrats to Marketplace for adding the topic of the military machine that few climate change analyses have addressed. The precise impact on a worldwide basis will unfortunately always be shrouded in secrecy. Interesting interviews and on base experiences. Kai is an excellent presenter, as well as Amy Scott, and I look forward to the next series. Keep up the good work!

Each of the seasons have had their own focus & I’ve learned so much from each of them. Molly’s start on lithium mining was great. Amy’s season on hurricanes was great, but hard for me since we lost our house in Harvey and have had to deal with sea level rise/high tide street flooding and insurance issues. PTSD, particularly the first & second episodes. Kai’s season has been very interesting & really gets to the reality of the US’s real role in climate change. I’ve relistened to them several times. Kudos to the whole team!
Compelling and Not as Bleak as Expected

The reporting in this season is incredible; it’s compelling and honest. I’m learning vital information and, while the climate situation is dire, this podcast shows a way forward while bringing the challenges and inequities of reality into the light.
