Palestine Post: Healthcare Workers Reportback from Gaza and Lebanon, Facing Repression on Return to CA

As we’ve done just about every Monday since October of last year, Law & Disorder returns to our recurring segment – The Palestine Post, discussing the latest news from Israel’s genocide in Gaza and on their border regions, and the efforts that people are taking around the world, to stop it. In this episode we’re in conversation with two healthcare workers who’ve been on medical missions to Gaza, one of whom also recently returned from a medical mission to Lebanon after Israel’s bombing campaign there. We’re joined by Bridget Rochios, a registered nurse and women’s health nurse practitioner and nurse midwife in the Bay Area. Bridget traveled to Gaza in May to volunteer at a maternity hospital. Since then, she’s faced consequences at her local job for wearing a pin depicting a watermelon. We’re also joined by Dr. Mohammad Subeh, a Palestinian American emergency room doctor at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View. He recently returned home from Lebanon in his third medical mission to the region in the past year, to provide emergency medical care amid Israel’s various bombardments.  —- Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Palestine Post: Healthcare Workers Reportback from Gaza and Lebanon, Facing Repression on Return to CA appeared first on KPFA.

The Violent Use of Artificial Intelligence as Border Enforcement w/ Petra Molnar

The intersection of immigration, border enforcement, new technology and specifically artificial intelligence, is racing toward more intense and more violent border enforcement strategies that are fueled by problematic algorithms, that mostly replicate the social and economic systems of power and exclusion that western societies are rooted in. On today’s show, we’ll explore part of how exclusionary and violent border policies have been aided by artificial intelligence, not just in the US but around the world, and how, because policies are slower to develop than technology, artificial intelligence industries move these practices forward without regulation and in global concert among the world’s wealthier states. We’re joined by Petra Molnar, a lawyer and anthropologist specializing on the impacts of migration technologies. She co-runs the Refugee Law Lab at York University and the Migration and Technology Monitor, which funds community grounded projects on border tech. She’s also the author of the book that we’ll be discussing today, called “The Walls Have Eyes: Surviving Migration in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” Learn more about the book here: https://thenewpress.com/books/walls-have-eyes Check out Petra Molnar’s organization the Migration and Technology Monitor: https://www.migrationtechmonitor.com/ — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post The Violent Use of Artificial Intelligence as Border Enforcement w/ Petra Molnar appeared first on KPFA.
