LA Considers Hiring Former IDF Soldiers for City Security w/ Jonah Valdez

LA Considers Hiring Former IDF Soldiers for City Security w/ Jonah Valdez

The city of Los Angeles is considering funding a private security firm that hires former Israeli soldiers, in the wake of a sale of Palestinian land for zionist settlement construction which took place in June at a Los Angeles synagogue, and protests outside were labeled “anti-semitic”. We speak with Jonah Valdez, a journalist and poet based in Los Angeles whose recent piece for the Intercept is called “LA City Council Considers Paying Former IDF Soldiers to Patrol its Streets.”

Bay Area ER Doc Returns from Gaza w/ Dr Mohammad Subeh

Bay Area ER Doc Returns from Gaza w/ Dr Mohammad Subeh

Well over nine months into Israel’s genocide in Gaza, many of the Palestinians throughout the area who survive Israel’s attacks have been disabled by either direct blasts or by the fallout from crumbling buildings. Meanwhile, access to medical care is severely limited, and over the weekend reports came out that polio had made its return to Gaza, where vaccines are generally inaccessible except to Israeli soldiers. Our guest in this segment is a Bay Area emergency doctor who just returned from his second trip to Gaza since October, providing emergency medical care amid the ongoing genocide. Dr Mohammad Subeh is a Palestinian American ER doctor who normally works at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View.

Netanyahu Faces Genocide Complaint to DOJ as Protests Target his DC Visit w/ Maria LaHood & Reem Assil

Netanyahu Faces Genocide Complaint to DOJ as Protests Target his DC Visit w/ Maria LaHood & Reem Assil

We spend this segment in Washington DC, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting for a series of diplomatic meetings starting Wednesday, with an address to congress, a meeting scheduled with President Joe Biden on Thursday, and then with former president Donald Trump this Friday in Mar-a-Lago. He’s also expected to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris during his trip. We’re first joined by Maria LaHood, the Deputy Legal Director of the Center for Constitutional Rights who has worked on legal projects related to justice in Palestine for decades, including on the Rachel Corrie legal case nearly 20 years ago. The Center for Constitutional Rights has urged the US Department of Justice to open a federal criminal investigation into the Israeli Prime Minister during his visit to the US, for his responsibility for genocide, war crimes, and torture, saying there is “overwhelming evidence” that, under Netanyahu, Israeli forces have committed these crimes against Palestinians during the nearly 10-month assault on Gaza.

We stay in Washington DC, to bring on a Bay Area activist who’s traveled to the capital in order to protest the Israeli Prime Minister’s visit. Our guest is Reem Assil, an activist and chef, and owner of the Bay Area restaurant Reem’s California. Reem is a longtime member of the Arab Resource and Organizing Center or AROC.

Combatting the Imprisonment of Palestine with Abolition w/ Fathi Nemer

Combatting the Imprisonment of Palestine with Abolition w/ Fathi Nemer

Prior to Israel’s current genocide in Gaza, that area was often referred since 2007 as an open air prison due to Israel’s complete control. Our first guest this morning argues that if we explore the violence of zionism – that is, not just Gaza but zionist control more broadly – as a prison, then an abolitionist challenge to it, can come into view. Our guest is Fathi Nemer, a researcher and writer who published a piece in Scalawag Magazine called “Imprisoning Palestine: Zionist colonialism through an abolitionist lens”, in which he and his co-author argue that Israel’s siege on Gaza is not the only carceral structure that zionism has imposed, but rather that the entirety of Palestinian life under zionism is a process of imprisonment.

De-centering ‘Jewish Values’ in Anti-Zionist Organizing w/ Anna Rajagopal

De-centering ‘Jewish Values’ in Anti-Zionist Organizing w/ Anna Rajagopal

More than nine months of Israel’s genocidal onslaught on Gaza also means more than nine months of a movement against zionist aggression, which has developed more engagement than ever before in the movement for Palestinian lives and dignity. That organizing work is complex and doesn’t come without internal nuance and disagreement. For example, what does it mean for one group of people to take on leadership and accept funds for the liberation of another people? In this segment, we’ll be talking about anti-zionist Jewish organizing, and what it could look like for Jewish people interested in the liberation of Palestine to de-center themselves. Our guest is Anna Rajagopal, a Jewish anti-zionist organizer who lives and organizes in Houston. Her latest piece for Mondoweiss is titled, “No need for ‘Jewish values’ in the fight for Palestine”.
